I love all the waterfalls and there are many in Iceland flowing seemingly from nowhere. They are the Starbucks of the natural world. Just look at the mountains and you will see one before long cascading down the side. Waterfalls are everywhere in Iceland.

Skogafoss in southern Iceland is one of the waterfalls I was so excited to see and it did not disappoint. The waterfall comes from 2 glaciers; Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull. It is a massive 197 feet tall and regularly produces a double rainbow on sunny days.

As you approach Skogafoss, you will follow a small stream to your left, walking on black volcanic soil and stones leading up to it. You will feel the spray of the water. Remember the packing guide tip about waterproof clothes? This is why. The roar of the falls is incredible! As it demonstrates its mighty force, I felt exhilarated to see such an imposing force. It is magnificent to behold and must be seen in person to truly grasp its power and immensity. Visitors appear the size of tiny ants compared to it.

There is a Viking legend of a chest of gold hidden under the falls and it is said that one person tried to retrieve it but was only able to bring the chest handle back.

Climbing the Stairs to the Top of Skogafoss

If you want to go to the top of the falls, there are 370 steps to get there. I’m told the best view is from the bottom but I'd love to hear from anyone that went to the top. The view of the surrounding area has to be stunning. Some of the stairs are steep so it is not recommended if you have limitations with walking or climbing.

Around the falls like almost everywhere in Iceland you will see sheep grazing. In addition to Skogafoss, you will see other falls off to the side. Give yourself at least an hour to take it all in. If you decide to climb to the top you'll need at least an extra 30 minutes.

There are some things in life that take your breath away. Skogafoss water did that for me. If you have the chance, make sure this one is on your list when you go to Iceland.
