Iceland is an amazing place to take advantage of the BEST the outdoors has to offer. Jaw-dropping Waterfalls, black sand beaches, ice-blue glaciers, erupting volcanoes, ice caves, and more are all available for you to explore.
If you plan to see some of the natural beauty of Iceland you will need to dress for the up-close encounters. So I've put together a list of what to pack for your trip to Iceland.
ON YOUR PERSON
Passport, visa, required entry documents
Covid-19 vaccination card if applicable
Trip vouchers and government and supplier paperwork
IN YOUR CARRY-ON
One or two days of clothing in case your luggage does not arrive when you do.
Needed medication. preferably in the original packaging
FOR THE PLANE
Earplugs or noise canceling headphones.
A mask so can sleep on the plane and not everyone around you will turn out their reading lights.
Travel pillow (if you use one.)
Hand wipes - for the seat tray and arms.
Travel blanket – if you tend to get cold on planes. You can also leave your jacket available instead.
Gum – It can be hard to find in the airport so bring it with you for the pressure when ascending and descending.
CLOTHING
Layers in Iceland! The weather will change so layers are key in Iceland. You may have 3-4 seasons in one day depending on where you are.
Long or thermal underwear all but summer,
Warm socks
Hat, gloves, and scarf in the all but summer
Long waterproof pants for the waterfalls.
Waterproof jacket or windbreaker. NOT water resistant, waterproof. You will layer these. For the winter bring a heavy waterproof coat.
Hiking Boots or water repellent shoes for walking around the falls, on the beach, and in the national parks. Crampons are a good choice for the parks and waterfalls. Ice cleats if you plan on glacier hikes gym shoes for around town. Be sure to pack closed toes shoes (in summer) which may be required at restaurants.
Swimsuit- for any lagoons you visit in winter or summer. Don’t forget snorkeling in the summer!
Iceland is casual except for a nice restaurant so plan accordingly.

Tripod for photographing the northern lights with a camera or smartphone
Smartphone chargers, charging sticks, or power banks. Batteries and power banks can not be packed in checked luggage.

EVERYTHING ELSE
Washcloth as many hotels in Europe do not provide these.
Small backpack or drawstring bag for excursions
Small umbrella
Refillable water bottle - Icelanders are big believers in no single-use plastics
Sunscreen - yes, even in Iceland. You're closer to the sun and reflections from the water or snow can increase your chances of sunburn.
Chapstick with SPF
Hand sanitizer or hand wipes for tours and walking around
OTC medication in the original package
Prescription medications with a prescription from the doctor, glasses, contacts
Other aids such as knee or ankle brace, foldable hiking stick
