- Savor the Symphony of Salzburg, Austria: A Magical Journey Awaits!
Location: Salzburg, Austria Great for: Singles, Couples, Families, Groups, and Honeymoons Itineraries to Consider: Discover Switzerland, Austria & Bavaria I took this trip to Salzburg as an excursion on a music-themed river cruise on the Danube. Some say once you have seen an "old town" or two you have seen them all. I said wait a minute. Imagine strolling through charming cobblestone streets, surrounded by the echoes of Mozart's masterpieces, the clip-clop of horse-drawn carriages, the smell of chocolate, and the stunning Alpine scenery. This is more than your typical "old town". This is Salzburg, and this picturesque town is waiting to captivate your heart. Discovering Salzburg: A Symphony of Sights and Sounds Salzburg is often referred to as the "City of Mozart," and is as enchanting as the timeless melodies of its most famous son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Nestled on the banks of the Salzach River, the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit and you will see why. As you meander through the charming Old Town, my favorite area, get ready to be transported back in time. Marvel at the medieval fortress, Hohensalzburg Castle, which sits majestically over the city, offering panoramic views of the surrounding hills and the iconic domes and spires below. Even the store signage is designed to foster the spirit of time gone by. Pro tip: a great view of the area including the fortress is from the museum. Buy a ticket to the museum, which is also perched on top of a hill, ride the elevator to the top and you'll see amazing views. For a truly musical experience, don't miss Mozart's Birthplace and Residence. These impeccably preserved museums give you a glimpse into the life of the musical prodigy, featuring original manuscripts, instruments, and personal belongings that will make your heart sing. A Taste of Tradition: Indulge in Salzburg's Culinary Delights As the sun dips behind the mountains, let your taste buds embark on a journey of their own. Head to the historic Getreidegasse, a bustling street lined with charming shops and traditional Austrian eateries. Treat yourself to a hearty plate of Wiener Schnitzel or savor the flavors of a classic apple strudel while enjoying the lively atmosphere. For a more intimate setting, try one of the local coffeehouses, such as Café Tomaselli, where you can relish a cup of rich Austrian coffee paired with delectable pastries. The warm ambiance and friendly locals will make you feel right at home. Be prepared to wait at times but it is well worth it. The ambiance is amazing albeit cramped. You will feel like you stepped back in time as the waiters all don bow ties and dapper attire and the decor is traditional as well. It has been run by the Tomaselli family for over 150 years so you know they are doing something right! You simply must try this place. Beyond the City Limits: Adventures Await While Salzburg itself is a treasure trove of delights, the surrounding region beckons with outdoor adventures and postcard-perfect landscapes. Head to the Salzkammergut Lake District, just a short drive away, to explore crystal-clear lakes, rolling hills, and charming villages. The picturesque postcard town of Hallstatt, with its idyllic setting and quaint architecture, is a must-visit destination. If you're a fan of "The Sound of Music," take a day trip to Mondsee, where scenes from the iconic film were shot. The stunning Basilica St. Michael and the serene shores of Lake Mondsee will transport you to the magical world of the von Trapp family. I say this all the time but Lake Mondee with the majesty of the mountains that surround it is absolutely stunning. It is one of those places you could sit on a bench and just envelope the beauty of it all. Final Notes: Plan Your Symphony in Salzburg Salzburg isn't just a destination; it's an enchanting experience waiting to unfold. Whether you're a history buff, a music enthusiast, or simply seeking a slice of Alpine paradise, this Austrian gem has something for everyone. So, pack your bags, embrace the melodic charm of Salzburg, and get ready for a journey filled with culture, history, and the sweet symphony of life. - Vaporetto: Getting Around Venice, Italy
Location: Venice Italy Great for: Singles, Couples, Groups, Families, and Honeymoons In Venice, the best way to discover this enchanting city is by walking or taking water transportation, as there are no roads for cars or buses. Here are a few ways to navigate the city. The video will show various modes mentioned below with a special focus on the Vaporetto, how to use it, and its costs. Vaporetto The Vaporetto or waterbus is a convenient and affordable way to travel around Venice's waterways. The ACTV company operates the Vaporetto system, and you can buy tickets at the ticket booths, onboard the boats, or using the ACTV app. Tickets can be purchased for one trip or multiple days. Vaporetto will even take you to the beaches. The airport is extra. Water Taxi If you want a faster and more luxurious way to travel around Venice, you can take a water taxi. They offer a more personalized service and can take you directly to your destination. Water taxi fares are not fixed, and the prices depend on the distance, time of day, and number of passengers. If you are not sure where the closest Vaporetto is to your hotel, grab a water taxi. Because you are on a timetable when heading back to the airport, a water taxi may be the best option for you on your way home. Gondola Gondolas are a classic mode of transportation in Venice, and they offer a romantic and scenic way to explore the city's canals. Gondolas are not regulated, so be prepared to negotiate with the gondoliers there or book a tour in advance, book online for a set price, or talk to the concierge at your hotel. Some of these are roundtrip for a nice relaxing or romantic experience as opposed to a transfer somewhere. Yes, it's touristy but a must-do. I'll do it again next time I'm there! Walking Venice is a pedestrian-friendly city, and walking is the best way to discover its hidden corners and historic landmarks. You will enjoy strolling the alleys and walking by the water but make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring a map or GPS device to navigate the narrow streets and alleys. Be aware that some areas, like St Marks Square, flood during hightide so watch your step! Pro Tip: Travel during shoulder season to avoid peak tourist season. The Vaporetto and water taxi services can be crowded during peak season, so plan accordingly and allow extra time to reach your destination. There you have it. The best ways to get around Venice. - Burano and Murano Venice, Italy
Location: Venice Italy Great for: Singles, Couples, Groups, Families, and Honeymoons No trip to Venice would be complete without a trip across the lagoon to Murano and Burano. These two of the most famous islands in the Venetian lagoon are very much worth a trip to see them. They are easy to get to via Vaporetto, water taxi, tour, or ferry. Burano Burano is known for its colorful houses, which are painted in bright hues of pink, blue, yellow, and green creating a scene that's straight out of a fairytale. You know I love Vibrant things :-) so this one is one of my favorites. Originally a marshy area that was settled by fishermen in the 6th century, the colorful houses were painted by the fishermen to make their homes more visible from the water. The island is also known for its intricate lace-making tradition, which dates back to the 16th century. You can visit the Lace Museum to learn more about the training and extensive craftsmanship of this art form. Considered to be among the finest in Europe, it was highly prized by European nobility. Today, Burano lace is still made by hand, usually by multiple lacemakers to create intricate and delicate designs. You can find shops selling lace products throughout the island. Pro tip: Make sure it is Burano lace. You will easily know by the price if it is actually Burano lace or standard lace but always ask. Stroll through the narrow walkways and cross the small bridges that weave through the town and along the canals and you'll feel like you've stumbled upon the most charming, picture-perfect village. The local seafood is a must too – fresh and delicious. So, if you're up for a splash of color, a dose of charm, and a taste of local life, Burano is it. Pro tip: if you like seafood, you can get a huge fish "cone" at a local eatery. Mostly calamari, it was a delight! I couldn't eat it all! Burano is easily accessible by private or shared tour, water taxi, or vaporetto from Venice. Murano Murano has been the center of the Venetian glass industry since the 13th century. In 1291, the Venetian Republic ordered all glass-makers in Venice to move to Murano to reduce the risk of fires in the city's wooden buildings. This move also helped maintain control over the glass industry, which was an important source of wealth and prestige. Over the centuries, Murano glass-blowers became renowned for their skill and creativity, and their glassware was highly sought after by European royalty and aristocrats. Murano Glass is known for its vibrant colors and today and remains one of Venice's most important industries. The island is home to many glass factories and shops. We visited one factory and saw a demonstration of several pieces being made from vases to an intricate glass horse. The island also has charming streets and canals to meander mostly without the crowds you will find in Venice. Both Murano and Burano have played important roles in Venice's history and culture, and they remain popular destinations for visitors. They are both usually done on the same trip so you can easily see them on half to full-day tours or on your own. If you love walking around charming towns like I do, give them a try. Supporting local artists not only allows you to take home a one-of-a-kind piece but also helps to sustain the city's creative community. Speaking of art, Old Town Bratislava is like an open-air gallery, with a wonderful host of statues with, in some cases, a comic twist. Each statue tells a unique story and adding a layer of charm to the city's character. Exploring the streets is like embarking on a scavenger hunt for these delightful surprises, and I couldn't resist sharing a few with you. Cumil - The Man at Work This is Čumil, affectionately known as "The Man at Work." The design is a bronze man casually peeking out of a manhole with his head and shoulders as if he's taking a break from his underground job. This whimsical statue captures the spirit of the city and has become a beloved symbol of Bratislava. Locals even consider rubbing his head for good luck! I never pass up a chance for good luck so guess what I did? Napoleon's Army Soldier Right in the heart of Old Town, you'll come across a statue that pays homage to a significant moment in Bratislava's history. This bronze soldier is a reminder of the Napoleonic Wars when French soldiers occupied the city in the early 19th century. The Paparazzi Statue Old Town Bratislava also has a sense of humor when it comes to its sculptures. This statue depicts a cameraman lurking in the corner, ready to capture unsuspecting passersby. This modern addition adds a playful touch to the historic surroundings and is a nod to the ever-present world of social media. Unfortunately, I could not find it or even a photo that I could use without royalties :-) Schöner Náci Schöner Náci, or Beautiful Ignatius is dressed in a top hat and tails. This statue commemorates a real-life character from the early 20th century who was known for his impeccable manners and eccentric attire. He wandered the streets, greeting people with a tip of his hat, spreading joy and harmony. If you are tall enough you can stand under the hat for a great photo! The Rubberneck Statue This one eluded me too. As you stroll through the streets, keep an eye out for the Rubberneck statue. This cheeky piece of art depicts a man peeking around a corner, unable to resist the temptation to see what's happening. It's a lighthearted reminder to stay curious and engaged with the world around you. So, there you have it! Bratislava is a hidden gem that deserves your attention. From its captivating history and architecture to its mouthwatering cuisine and unique shopping opportunities, this city has something for everyone. Whether you're a history buff, a foodie, or an art lover, Bratislava won't disappoint. So pack your bags and get ready to explore this delightful slice of Slovakia. Happy travels! - 4 Days in Venice, Italy
Location: Venice, Italy Great for: Singles, Couples, Groups, Families, and Honeymoons Venice, Italy—a city teeming with an array of attractions and must-see sites, all squeezed into a quick four-day adventure. Picture yourself, gelato in hand as I did, casually meandering along the winding canals, soaking in the sprawling views from the Rialto Bridge or St Marks Square, exploring the rich history seeping from the walls of the Doge's Palace. See yourself on a magical ride across the serene Venetian lagoon and through the romantic canals in a gondola to wrap up your trip. Sigh....yes this is Venice. If you know me or have read my articles, you know I don't always speak in such a "flowery" tone. But that is how Venice makes me feel and I think you will feel the same. I knew I would like Italy, after all my father is from there, although much farther south, I send clients here who adore it, and I've studied the country. But I had no idea just how much it would take hold. So let me share my impressions with you of my unforgettable and much-too-short trip to Venice. Day 1 - Arrival Day Our trip today began in Vilshofen, Germany. We took a private transfer to the Munich train station on the Autobahn! Yep, that autobahn And it is true, you can go as fast as you like but the recommended speed is 80 mph. Some cars flew by us in a flash, others drove what seemed like the recommended speed. Our driver was only allowed the recommended speed. The train station in Munich is a well-oiled machine. Overwhelming at first but laid out well and easy to maneuver. That journey is a different article so I leave it there for now. We traveled from Munich to Venice passing through Germany, Austria, and finally into Italy. If you have never seen the Dolomites, take the train! They reach to the sky dwarfing the lush green lands and vineyards around them They are absolutely stunning. The train took 6 or so hours so much of the first day was gone but well worth the loss. Do it once at least. As we crossed the water and approached Venice the excitement was barely containable. Upon arrival, we exited St. Lucia Station. Don't get off in Maestro, that is mainland Venice and if you are staying on the island, you will exit at Santa Lucia. Fitting enough, it is the last stop for the train. When you exit you will walk right out to a plaza with the most amazing view. We had arrived in Venice! Everything you need is available when you exit from private water taxi to Vaporetto tickets. We arrived at the Hotel Palazzo Stern in time to watch the sunset at dinner from the patio restaurant of our hotel. We stayed right on the Grand Canal. This Moorish palace-turned-hotel dates back to the 15th century! So if you like boutique hotels with a bit of history, this may be the place for you. The concierge is amazing and everyone is very helpful. I chose this hotel because it is within walking distance of sites, restaurants, plazas, museums, you name it. And what is not nearby by foot, is a quick trip on the Vaporetto which happens to be right next door. Pro tip: Buy a multi-day ticket on the Vaporetto, you can get anywhere with it. Uh...and don't lose your ticket like I did!! They will not replace it. Dining Diner: Scallops at the hotel, very good but pricey. The view of the grand canal was amazing. Day 2- Murano, Burano, and Exploring Day 2 was a Sunday and we didn't want to have to worry about things being closed so we planned to take a morning tour to Murano and Burano Islands. That way we had extra time to explore after the tour. We met our guide by the water outside St Mark's Square and took the small group tour via private boat for a short ride across the lagoon to Murano first. The ride alone is beautiful. Our guide was amazing and very knowledgeable about the area, the history, and told us about each island we passed along the way. There are many. Murano is known for it's glasswork and specifically, Murano glass. We visited a factory and watched the artison make 3 pieces of glass then visited the gift shop, more like a museum, of the work they produce. They offer items for all price levels even a small piece of candy made of murano glass. Our next stop was my favorite; Burano. It is known for its vibrant and colorful houses, lace-making tradition, and charming canals. We saw a lace-making demonstration and visited the shop then had plenty of time on our own to explore. This town has many beautiful canals, restaurants, and shops to explore. First, gelato and soaking in the charm of this little island. More shopping, and exploring, taking photos then time for a fish cone. It was mostly calamari but I love calamari so it was wonderful. It was almost big enough for 2 people. Pro tip: Burano lace is a painstaking process requiring multiple highly trained and skilled knitters. If the lace you are buying seems a great price, it is probably not true Burano lace. Ask, they will tell you if it is. With the amount of work going into each piece, you can imagine it claims a high price. Dining Breakfast: Hotel. Lunch: Fish Cone in Burano, Cicchetti (think hardy tapas) & Aperativo in Venice at Bacaro al Ravano. Recommend! Try the anchovy cicchetti! Dinner: Pizza at -Pizzeria Ristorante Da Gianni on the water. Recommend! Tour: Murano and Burano Small Group Tour Day 3 - Gondola Ride and Walking the Town Be sure to hop on a gondola to get the quintessential Venetian experience. Finding the place was not the easiest due to directions but the trip was fun. Tickets can be purchased in a variety of ways. I booked in advance, you can also go up to stands everywhere and buy them or get them from the concierge at your hotel for the closest one to you. I love our trip and will post videos on YouTube. We ventured down a variety of small canals and even went into the grand canal for a brief time. For anyone on a honeymoon or looking for romance, select a private gondola. The smaller canals are more romantic than the grand canal which can have quite a bit of traffic. Rialto Bridge (Ponte di Rialto): As the oldest and most famous bridge spanning the Grand Canal, the Rialto Bridge is an iconic symbol of Venice. In the midst of summer, it was CROWDED and a bit hard to maneuver but who can pass up this iconic site? I found the vendors in the markets almost everywhere there, including Rialto, to be reasonable for souvenirs. They all have the basics bags, shirts, etc. Hats are big in Venice so you will see them everywhere. Now, by St. Marks Square you will also find Prada, Versace, Luis Vitton, Valentino, and other designers, if that is your preference. St. Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco): This iconic square is the heart of Venice and a hub of activity. It is surrounded by notable landmarks like St. Mark's Basilica, the Doge's Palace, and the Campanile (bell tower) and is a meeting point for many tours. The square's architectural grandeur and vibrant atmosphere make it a captivating place to visit. It is quite busy at times but big enough to hold everyone! Fair warning, at high tide, you may need boots and you can rent them there. If you don't want to wait in line to get into St Mark's Basilica, typically 2 hours, your best bet is a tour with skip-the-line access. The line is always long to get in but get there early if you don't have tickets. For a must-do experience, have dessert and coffee at Caffe Florian in the square while listening to classical music. This elegant Caffe opened in 1720 and has served celebrities, and dignitaries, and welcomes everyone. Don't worry about attire, it is whatever you are wearing. The inside rooms are steeped in history as well. The waiters are dressed in formal attire adding to the ambiance. Definitely an experience in Venice! If you are looking for a more casual experience, try any of the numerous cafes down the small but numerous alleyways around the square or in the various neighborhoods in Venice. The Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale): Situated adjacent to St. Mark's Basilica, the Doge's Palace was the seat of power during the Venetian Republic. This magnificent Gothic palace features opulent halls and a network of prisons below. Be sure to cross the "Bridge of Sighs", where prisoners were said to have seen their last view of Venice through a small window before being put to death. It also houses artwork by renowned painters such as Tintoretto and Veronese. Get tickets in advance if you want Audiovox, they sell out quickly. We were able to get tickets the day we went but they had sold out of the Audiovox headsets. Pro tip: If you want great photos of Venice, go to Punta della Dogana. It was very windy, that's not a pose so plan for the wind. The photos you can get here are stunning all around the point. Dining Breakfast :At the hotel. Lunch/Snack: Caffe Florian Dinner at Terrazza Dei Nobili. I don't recommend this one. If you want cold clams with overcooked pasta, overcooked gnocchi, and poor wait service, try this place. Dessert at a local bakery. Cannolli! Tour: Gondola Experience Day 4 - Goodbye Venezia Our journey started in Budapest, Hungary on a river cruise to Vilshofen, Germany then the train to Venice. Although I didn't want to leave Venice, it was time to get back home.....for a while anyway. But, trust me, the "City of Water" has a truly unique charm that will leave you spellbound and most definitely anxious to return and experience more. Our ride to the airport via water taxi was just as memorable as the trip itself. As we left the hotel we passed under Rialto Bridge, and by the hotels, homes, and museums seeming to float atop the water, we said goodbye to St Mark's Square on the most beautiful day. Our driver told us about the cost of housing and how much less it is on mainland Venice but he just couldn't leave the Island. "I am Venician," he said with such pride and he just couldn't imagine living anywhere else! Check out a few options for tours next time you are considering Venice! - Tipping in Iceland
Location: Iceland Great for: Singles, Couples, Families, Groups, Elopements, and Honeymoons As Americans, we are obsessed with doing the right thing with tipping. Tipping is a question I get all the time. In the US we tip a lot. It is very different in Europe and mostly non-existent in Iceland. Icelanders are paid well so tipping is not expected with only a few exceptions. Don't worry, you won't get stared at if you don't tip! Okay, ready? Here we go: Waiter/waitress: Your bill will usually come with a 15% service charge. If it does, there is no need to tip. If it does not, you can leave 10% if you like. Bartender: It is uncommon to tip a bartender in Iceland Taxi: No tipping Room Service: No tipping Hotel Housekeeper: No tipping but if you had an exceptionally messy evening, you might consider it. Porter/Bellhop: A tip is not expected but if you have a lot of heavy bags, you can always give them 1-2 Krona Spa Services: Again, not expected. If you are staying at a spa, check the spa menu for recommendations. Guided Tours: Tours vary slightly from the norm depending on the type of tour. If you are on a bus tour, your documents will advise you on the recommended amounts to tip the driver, local tour guides, and/ or the tour director. Local Tour Guides: They don't expect a tip but may take one if offered. The Funky Food and Beer Tour, pictured here, advised us not to tip. If you know your will be tipping and want to be extra prepared: Bring your tips already separated and addressed in a sealed envelope for each person/vendor (always carry the cash for tips with you). That way you don’t forget anyone. And bring an extra envelope with extra money, for the unexpected or if you decide to add on a bit for someone who saves the day. - Need to Know When Visiting Iceland
Location: Iceland Best for: Families, Honeymooners, Couples, Outdoor Enthusiasts, Photographers, Solo Travelers So, you are heading to Iceland, or you'd like to anyway. Iceland is an amazing place with so much to offer from museums to waterfalls and everything in between. Iceland is primed for outdoor adventure in spectacular natural settings, making it the perfect destination for adventurers and a great for honeymooners too! If you are going to this breathtaking country there are a few things to know before traveling and this article covers only the basics. Subscribe to the blog on the main page to see more information about travel to Iceland including where to go, what to do, where to stay, and so on. I'll also tell you when we are sending groups to Iceland should you want to come along. So let's get you set for your trip. PASSPORT AND VISAS As of the writing of this article, a visa is not required for citizens of the U.S. if you hold a US passport for stays of up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for 3 months AFTER departure from Iceland and must have been issued within the last 10 years. These requirements change often and therefore it is best that you check with the Embassy of Iceland for the most up-to-date visa information. Pro tip: Please make a photocopy (or take a picture with your cell phone) of your passport identification page and keep it separate from your original. It’s also a good idea to leave a digital copy or hard copy with someone at home. This may speed up the replacement process should you lose your passport. TRIP PROTECTION You are on an adventure in Iceland and could be checking out amazing waterfalls, climbing on glaciers, caving, or just walking around. Keeping that in mind, cancellation and medical insurance is highly recommended as they can safeguard against the expenses associated with in-country medical emergencies, lost or delayed baggage, and emergency cancelation or interruption of your trip for specified covered reasons. To receive maximum coverage, this should be purchased within 14 -21 days of the initial trip deposit depending on your insurance company. However, it can be purchased up to 48 hours prior to departure depending on the insurer you use and what you want to be covered. Ask your travel consultant about time-sensitive exclusions when you purchase after the 14 days. Pro tip: Buy it at the deposit. You can always update to add additional expenses as you add them to your reservation. Better safe than sorry when it comes to meeting those deadlines. MEDICATION If there are any medical items that are essential to your health, such as prescription drugs or corrective eyewear, bring extra and carry them with you in hand luggage. It is recommended that OTC medications are brought in blister packs or new travel bottles that are sealed. For prescriptions, make sure you have the bottle and a prescription or note from your doctor. Many items we find over the counter in the US, require a prescription in Iceland. Generally speaking, you can bring a 30-day supply with you but don’t put them in pill cases if you can avoid it. It may be harder to get the following items when in Iceland so bring some along. Recommended Items: Basic medicine kit: pain relievers, band-aids for blisters after those hikes to the waterfalls, antiseptic cream, etc. Digestive and diarrhea aids such as Imodium, Pepto-Bismol, and the like. Anti-histamine for allergies Motion sickness aids – For boat trips, tours, the plane. Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher), after-sun lotion, lip balm, a wide-brimmed hat (summer trips), and sunglasses Yes, these are important in Iceland too. WEATHER, SEASONS, & CLIMATE Because the island varies depending on where you are, let's focus on the area around Reykjavik since it is where the bulk of travelers base. The daylight also has a period of twilight so during December, it will be near dark almost all the time, and in June, it is near daylight almost all the time. Iceland gets 2.1 to 4.6 inches of rain each month. So rainy season, technically September, is hardly raining at all by most standards. However, expect to get wet when visiting the falls and ocean areas. Summer: The temperature June through August ranges from 54° F to 57° F with July being the hottest. The summer begins with 21 hours of daylight and ends with 16 hours. Fall: The temperature from September to November ranges from 39° F to 50° F with September being the hottest. The fall begins with 16 hours of daylight and ends with 6 Winter: The temperature from December through February stays around 36° F. Winter starts with 4 Hours of sunlight and ends with 8 hours. Spring: The temperature from March through May ranges from 38° F to 48° F with May being the hottest. Spring begins with 12 hours of daylight and ends with 18 ELECTRICITY, PHONE & INTERNET Electricity: Iceland is 220-240 volts which will affect your ability to use some appliances. Make sure your device can handle the voltage. Most modern phones, tablets, cameras, laptops, and CPAP machines can work with both 110 and 220-volt outlets. Many devices will have a sticker denoting their limits. If it says something like “110V-220V" or “100V-240V,” it will work within that range. Bring a converter to convert the voltage or use what they have. Iceland uses Plug C and F so you will need an adapter kit. Phone: Consult your phone provider prior to departure to discuss coverage, overseas rates, and international package options. Many have a $ 10-a-day charge to use your phone, data, and text message allotments. It is also possible to purchase international calling cards within Iceland to make calls overseas, as well as SIM cards. A SIM card requires that your phone is "unlocked" the card will provide a new phone number in Iceland while using the sim. You will return to your normal US number when removing the Iceland SIM card. Iceland has many remote areas so there may be times when no signal is available. If on a tour, you will usually have WIFI and USB ports to charge your phone on the buses. Ask your travel advisor or tour group for each tour. Internet: Free Wireless access is available in most tourist areas, airports, and hotels. You’ll find Internet cafés in both small and large cities throughout Iceland. FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS: Remember to pack sufficient memory cards, zoom lens, a spare camera battery and charger, and a dust-resistant case. Pro tip: It is windy on the beaches so make sure you have a lens protection filter on. CURRENCY Iceland uses the Icelandic Krona, abbreviated ISK. Touristy areas will accept US currency but you will be leaving it up to them for the conversion. We recommend that you get local currency from your bank before you leave home when traveling to Iceland, although an in-country ATM is an option. Credit cards are your best option and almost everyone charges EVERYTHING in Iceland. Always verify which currency a vendor is using for a transaction, and know the exchange rate. If you use a credit card and are offered the option of US or Krona, select Krona because the vendor may charge exchange fees on top of any other fees and may not be up to date on the exchange rate. As a side note, your bank card may work, but Visa or MasterCard are more widely accepted. Note that traveler's cheques are rarely used anymore. Discover credit card may not be widely accepted.
