- Have Vaccine, Will Travel?
What will travel look like as we near a "post-covid" environment? With vaccines rolling out we are hearing quite a bit about countries open to travelers who have been vaccinated. And travel advisor phones are slowly beginning to ring again for travel later this year. With this desire to travel again, or at least to plan a trip, comes the realization that travel is going to be a bit different for some time. Requirements will vary by the country you are traveling to and by the country you are coming from. According to a Destinations Analyst survey in March of this 2021, 60% of Americans say they will travel in the next three months. In addition, 84% of those surveyed have, at minimum, tentative plans to travel in 2021. The survey also noted that 36% feel travel will return to normal this summer with 42% saying it will return to normal in the fall. The key decisions for consumers are vaccine rollouts, pent up demand with a “need” to for stress release, and desire to see family. What will travel look like? That is the $64,000 question right now because it is changing rapidly and varies by country. It is best to be flexible when planning ahead and know that restrictions and requirements will change. Traveling over the next few months will have a host of requirements. Expect everything from all the requirements mentioned below to only a few of the requirements except, of course, masks at some point in your trip. As of the writing of this article, there are only minor changes if you are vaccinated so assume you must comply with the requirements. Here are some of the requirements I am seeing right now. Masks on flights, in buildings, and open spaces when you cannot maintain required distance. Negative Covid tests results. (yes even if vaccinated) Covid testing before your trip. Covid testing during your trip Covid testing a few days before flying home if you are traveling internationally Quarantine requirements pending a negative test result in country Quarantine requirements regardless of negative Covid test in country Temperature checks before and during your vacation Vaccine requirement for adults to sail or enter another country Adults traveling with unvaccinated children require children to have a negative test if you are traveling to a country or cruise that requires adults to be vaccinated. Destination country mandated government health insurance Destination country health visa or entry document to enter or exit. This is usually done online and is mainly a health questionnaire but may have a fee attached. Passenger locator form and/or phone App Don’t let all of this scare you if you are comfortable traveling. Your travel advisor will work with you and explain what your specific destination requires. Many all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean have free testing onsite for your return, and Mexico has limited entry requirements as of the writing of this article. Most places remain on reduced capacity and have social distancing and covid sanitation standards in place. Ask your travel adviser for help navigating the environment. Where do travelers want to go? Mexico, the Caribbean, Florida, and the Theme Parks are big right now. The USA, in general, is expected to increase before international travel. National Parks are coupled with the family road trip. Hawaii is coming up in conversation quite a bit as well due to the direct flights from Orlando and many other cities. It offers social distancing and a varied terrain so it has something for everyone. Cruise fans are dedicated travelers and anxious to cruise again but that is going to be a few months away with a very few exceptions in the US. Some cruise lines have new ports in the Caribbean and will be sailing in July from those ports. While travel may seem daunting, requirements will slowly ease as time passes and hopefully we will continue on this path to recovery without interruption. Travelers are beginning to feel hopeful again that travel is in their future. - Don’t Stop Wine-ing
You may be asking yourself why a wine cruise is any different than any other cruise that serves wine? Allow me to answer that question. Wine themed cruises provide a unique dimension to river cruising by allowing you to immerse in the history of Europe’s renowned wine regions. In fact, there is also a wine river cruise in the US along the Snake and Columbia rivers. But let’s talk Europe today. Here are several added benefits to selecting a wine river cruise over a standard river cruise. First, you will have a wine host onboard. Wine hosts are normally from renowned wineries, mainly in North America, and are either owners, winemakers, instructors, or sommeliers. Therefore, you will be learning from an expert in the wine industry. While onboard special food and wine parings, wine tastings, and discussions will take place. During lunch and dinner, you will be able to taste hand-picked wines from the hosts which may be from their own vineyards or vineyards along the cruise route. Learn about the wine and why they pair well with the meal. The shore excursions will be immersive and designed to teach about the grape varieties in the regions, winemaking techniques, and environment. You will have the opportunity to see medieval wine cellars, iconic vineyards, and local wineries. The groups are small to allow you to walk with artisans and vintners in centuries-old vineyards and learn the history of the vineyard and of course sample the wine. Imagine walking through France’s Saint-Emilion, tasting Tokaji wines in Szekszard region of Hungary, or Beaujolais in France to name a few. Wine cruises cover the gamut of wines and locations, from French, Viennese, Croatian, or German and so on. Whether it is learning about a wine you have never heard of or tasting the classics you have grown to love, there is a wine cruise for you. Choosing a cruise is about one of two things, where you want to go or what wine you would like to taste. If you like port, the Douro river in Portugal is perfect. If Riesling is your preference, try the Rhine and Moselle Rivers. Are you in love with Vienna? The Danube cruises offer so much and have a wine cruise too. Let’s not forget France, there are several cruises along the Rhone, Saone, Garonne, Dordogne, Seine, and more. It is not just about wine. The shore excursions offered are a variety including cities, fairytale towns, castles, medieval walled cities, even a French cooking school or hunting for truffles. So come with a group, split up for excursions, then come together for lunch or dinner and discuss the fun you had while on shore. And don’t forget, shore excursions are included. Take one in the morning come back to the ship for lunch and head out again after lunch for another one. In closing, whether you are a wine connoisseur, just love to try new wines, or want to see Europe, this type of river cruise is worth exploring. Wine groups, book clubs, or a group of friends that love to travel can enjoy a fun time together on this type of river cruise. Some photos courtesy of AmaWaterways

- Ten Secrets to Avoiding Seasickness
The day has arrived! You reach the port and prepare for boarding. As you step onto the gangway you can feel the excitement building. Walking onto the ship you feel elated that you are here and the vacation can begin! You are thinking “Lunch is a wonderful way to wait for your room”. Off to your room to get settled and…wait…what is that queasy feeling? Why is the room moving? Am I going to fall over? And there it is… the dreaded sea sickness begins. But it doesn’t have to ruin your trip! Here are a few ways to combat sea sickness and have an absolutely wonderful cruise experience. 1. Let me start with the one you will like the least. Don’t drink too much. Over-indulgence is your enemy, moderation is your friend. Alcohol drains your body of B-Vitamins. Which is also why you get a headache. Bring B Complex with you, it is also good for a hangover. But don’t take too much, follow directions. 2. Plan ahead: bring your medication and take it the on your way to the ship. There are a variety of medicines you can get that are over the counter. The classics include, Dramamine, Bonamine and a variety of other oral medications. Patches and pressure point wrist bands are also an option and work well. Some are prescriptions so you should check with your physician. What you use is a matter of choice. Always check with your physician to make sure it is ok with your other medications if you take anything. 3. Try not to travel when seas may be rough if at all possible. Summer in the Caribbean for example but only if there is a hurricane. Obviously difficult to plan when a hurricane may be present. Certain areas such as the English Channel and North Sea are rougher than other areas. 4. Location, location, location. While ships have come a long way from “the old days” of cruising with optimal ballast to keep the ship from too much rocking, you are best in a mid-ship cabin. Think of a zodiac racing through the water, what does the front of the zodiac look like? Yep, so when you see the ad that says, great price, buy now, ask where the room is. The best order is, Mid, Back, Front. Also consider lower decks as opposed to upper decks. 5. Get a balcony room, on one of the lowest balcony levels. Then walk outside focus on the horizon and take a great breath of fresh air. In an inside room you can feel the movement more 6. I know you are on vacation but get some sleep. 7. Stay hydrated…with water. Have water delivered to your room before you arrive. That way you always have water when in your room and take it with you too. 8. Although water is my choice, if you are feeling nauseous, try some ginger ale or a clear carbonated beverage to settle your stomach. Ginger is great for settling your stomach, hence, ginger ale is my go-to. 9. Lose the electronics. If you are trying to read your phone or iPad for any length of time, the movement of your eyes against the movement of the ship make it worse. 10. Depending on where you are sailing, try not to get overheated. Cool off when needed, jump in the pool or the water if you are on shore. I hope you find these tips helpful for your next seasick free cruise! Let me know if you have any ideas. Bon Voyage! - More Than Stunning Beaches
Hawaii, More Than Amazing Beaches Ho’okipa, the word for Hawaiian hospitality, also known as the Aloha spirit, emanates from the people you encounter. It is no wonder that on the top on many wish lists, you will find Hawaii. From Volcanoes to reefs, black sand beaches (white, green, and red too), rainforests, coffee plantations, and 80 golf courses, Hawaii has much more to offer than stunningly beautiful beaches. Let's not forget historical sites as well, such as Pearl Harbor and the USS Missouri. Most islands are easy to maneuver by car and the best way to see this island. So how do you decide which Island is for you? Here is a brief description of each Island to help you decide and don't forget a Luau while there! Hawaii – The Aloha State The Island of Hawaii, known to some as the Big Island, is geologically the newest of the islands has the most diverse terrain of the islands. Rainforests, snowy mountain peaks, molten magma fields, pasturelands, and black sand beaches are all part of the wonderous landscape. Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park and Akaka Falls State park are not to be missed. This island has stunning overlooks, stargazing, great golf courses, and cowboys! This is another great island for first time visitors, there is so much here you can’t do it all in one trip. Oahu – The Gathering Place Oahu is the 3rd largest Island with a volcanic topography. It boasts some of the most well know sites from Waikiki Beach, Downtown Honolulu, Diamond Head, Punchbowl crater, and the Pearl Harbor memorial. Oahu offers great shopping, dining, and of course surfing. After all, it is the home of the famous Banzai pipeline. Simply called pipeline or the pipe by locals. The landscape varies with beach, pasture lands, and a dormant volcano with lava tubes to explore! Oahu is even home to a Dole plantation. Get out and explore this wonderful island. This island is great for first time visitors to the islands. Maui – The Valley Isle Maui is home to luxury resorts, dining, boutiques, white-sand beaches, and charming small towns. If you want to see marine life, Maui is where to go. In fact, it may be the best place in the world to see whales. Each year, 10,000 to 20,000 humpback whales swim from Alaska to Hawai'i. Head to Haleakala National Park and visit the crater for an amazing sunrise, you won’t be sorry! Kaua’I – The Garden Isle Kaua’I is geologically, the oldest Island and 80% of the Island is inaccessible by car, leaving its natural beauty a site to behold. With countless waterfalls, sea cliffs rising to 4,000 feet, sea caves, water sports, horseback riding, ziplines, and the famous Waimea Canyon, there is much for the nature-lover to do. Not into Nature? Try one of the numerous golf courses, beaches, spas, or shopping perhaps? Moloka’I – The Friendly Isle Moloka'i is only 38 miles long and ten miles wide. But don't let that deter you from this secluded island, it also has the world's highest sea cliffs, beautiful vistas, waterfalls, and longest continuous fringing reef. Make sure to visit Kalaupapa National Historical Park and see an isolated former leper colony below the towering cliffs. Reservations required so call ahead. The site can also be viewed from the cliff top Kalaupapa Lookout in Palaau State Park. Golfing, fishing, hiking, and snorkeling are all memory-makers on this little island. Lana’I – The Pineapple Island Lana'i is the smallest inhabited island in the chain and contains ancient rock sculptures, waterfalls, and some of the best spots for snorkeling. Off the shore of Kaiolohia you will see a WWII Liberty Ship that was marooned on the reef. Enjoy this sight while hiking or walking along the beach. This is not a beach for swimming though. It also boasts 2 of the most prestigious golf courses in the world; Maneli Bay and Ko’ele This Island is made for off the beaten path adventures and you’ll find all 4 seasons on this island so pack appropriately. Take a hike on a rustic trail or visit red rocks of Keahiakawelo. Island hopping is great but each Island is unique and offers so much, that it is hard to fit is all in. We recommend picking one island and focus on that island. That said, you can catch ferries to close islands, or inter-island planes if you want to stay for a while and experience few. Cruises will also do the rounds of the Islands and you don’t have to repack. We are here to explain all the options and offer advice based on your interests. Schedule a consultation today and let's start planning an adventure to your most memorable vacation.
- On Everyone's Bucket List
The Northern Lights One item that seems to be on everyone’s bucket list is to see the Northern Lights. There are many places to see this amazing dance in the sky and many ways to enjoy them. This article will cover the most popular places, when to go, and how to get there. The northern lights, or aurora borealis, occurs when electrically charged particles from the sun collide with the earth’s magnetic field. The result is an amazing show of color. Normally we think of the green hues but they can appear red, blue, orange, purple, or pink. Depending on the source, all of the following places are the “best place to see the Northern Lights”. So, take your pick. Norway - Although Oslo is only at 60 degrees north, the lights can be seen there but a better base would be Tromso. It is far enough north to almost certainly see them. Again, best to get away from the city lights. Iceland - The lights are visible almost every night given the limited population and vast open spaces. Thingvellir National Park is a popular spot. You can see them from Reykjavik but may have to much ambient light. Try a ferry to see them from the water. Finland- Due to the low population density, Finland boasts 200 days per year of viewing. Lvosto is a popular viewing spot here. Sweden – Abisko, home of the first ice hotel and north of the Arctic circle, has clear skies and is surrounded by mountains offering a wonderful view. Northern Alaska – Fairbanks is a good base due to accessibility, hotel space and view. Take a tour away from the city for the best view. Other common places include Alberta Canada, and the Scottish Highlands or Shetland Island. Scotland calls them the Mirrie (Merry) Dancers. There are many ways to see this amazing display and most offer alerts so you don't have to stay awake all night. Tours abound, coastal cruises, ferries, and expedition cruises are all excellent ways to see the lights. If this is on your bucket list, there will be something that works for you.
