- Which Hawaiian Island Should You Choose?
Tropical Paradise Yes, but so Much More From Volcanoes to reefs, black sand beaches (white, green, and red too) rainforests and coffee plantations, and 80 golf courses, Hawaii has much more than many realize. Let's not forget historical sites such as Pearl Harbor. Most islands are easy to maneuver by car and the best way to see this island. But, how do you decide which Island to see or how many to see? Consider three things 1) what you want to do or see 2) the amount of time you have, and 3) the budget you have set to determine how many Islands to see. Oahu Oahu boasts some of the most well know sites from Waikiki Beach, Downtown Honolulu, and Pearl Harbor memorial. Oahu offers great shopping, dining, and of course surfing. The landscape varies with pastureland, a dormant volcano, even the Dole plantation. Get out and explore this wonderful island. This island is great for first-time visitors to the islands and can be a destination alone with so much to do and also leaving time to relax. Hawai'i The Island of Hawaii, known to some as the Big Island, is the newest of the islands and has the most diverse terrain of the islands. Rainforests, snowy mountain peaks, molten magma fields, pastureland, and black sand beaches. Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park and Akaka Falls State Park are not to be missed. This island has stunning overlooks, stargazing, and cowboys! This is another great island for first-time visitors and can be a week-long adventure without even leaving the Island. Kaua'i' Kaua'i's natural beautify is a site to see. With numerous waterfalls, sea cliffs rising to 4,000 feet, sea caves, water sports, horseback riding, ziplines, and the famous Waimea Canyon, there is much for the nature-lover to do. Not into Nature? Try one of the numerous golf courses, beaches, spas, or shopping perhaps? Maui Maui is home to luxury resorts, fine dining, boutiques, white-sand beaches, and charming small towns. If you want to see marine life, Maui is where you want to go. In fact, it may be the best place in the world to see whales. Each year, 10,000 to 20,000 humpback whales swim from Alaska to Hawai'i. December through May is your best bet for whales. Moloka'i Moloka'i remains much like "Old Hawaii". It is only 38 miles long and ten miles wide. But don't let that deter you from this secluded island, it also has the world's highest sea cliffs and longest continuous fringing reef. Halawa Valley is great for hiking and has a not-to-be-missed 250-foot waterfall named Mo'oula Falls. You'll need a guide to explore the Valley. Papohaku Beach Park has one of Hawaii's largest white-sand beaches. Lana'i Lana'i is the smallest inhabited island in the chain and contains ancient rock sculptures, waterfalls, and some of the best spots for snorkeling. Take a hike on a rustic trail or visit the red rocks of Keahiakawelo. Keahiakawelo has no vegetation, no birds, but is a rocky landscape that, when the sun sets, creates beautiful red and purple hues on the rocks. You will need a 4-wheel drive for this one. The Munro Trail is a 1600 ft climb to the top of Mt Lanaihale which stands 3,370 ft. I hope this brief rundown of the Islands helps you decide which Island, or how many Islands are right for you. Don't forget to take in a Luau while there! - Tenerife, A Canary Island Dream
Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, is a popular hot spot for visitors. It's just off the coast of Africa and is an autonomous region of Spain. It is also a paradise of sandy beaches, beautiful peaks, thrilling nightlife, and idyllic villages. With a cosmopolitan mix of visitors in the towns and on the beaches, Tenerife is a tourist destination that offers hundreds of options to enjoy. Don't miss these essential experiences during your trip to the Island. 1. The Nature Tenerife has 43 protected spaces, covering 48% of its landmass. These include Teide National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At 1,200 ft above sea level, the Teide is Spain’s highest peak. It’s a volcanic space where a cable car with spectacular views takes you near the summit. At the Anaga and Teno Country Parks, with their laurel forests, you’ll be amazed at the giant ferns and a magical fairy tale feel. The Cliffs of Los Gigantes, which rises to 1,968 feet above sea level, are another of those places that will leave you breathless. Also within your reach are cycling, hiking or paragliding to fly over the Island’s incredible landscapes. 2) Festivals and Nightlife Fun is part of the Island’s DNA with dream beach clubs and rooftop bars, original and varied shows, and festivals with the most glittering stars of the global music scene, as well as one of the world’s best Carnivals. In February Carnival takes over the Island, particularly the capital, Santa Cruz, with one of the world’s brightest, most colorful, and well-attended celebrations. The romerías (religious pilgrimages) are one of the best examples of Canary Islands culture. From March to September the carts, oxen, and typical food, including potatoes and special sauces, and local wine and meat vendors, take over the Island’s villages. 3) Beaches and Pools Tenerife’s beaches and sun-filled days, attract millions of visitors every year. With beaches to the north and south walk on bot golden and black sand, originating from its volcanic origins. Natural pools created by solidifying lava, or “charcos”, are an equally authentic and gratifying alternative, to the beach. Try San Juan de la Rambla “Charco de La Laja”, Icod de los Vinos “Charco del Viento” or Guía de Isora “La Jaquita”. Tenerife also includes other options, such as laying back on any of its incredible beaches to sunbathe or doing one of an endless choice of activities like kayak, windsurfing, scuba diving, or surfing. 4) Sealife In the waters to the south of the Island, around three miles from the coast, you can cruise among whales and dolphins 365 days a year. Tenerife is one of the best places in the world to spot them, home to a stable colony of bottlenose dolphins and around 400 pilot whales. Just taking a trip from one of the ports on the south of the Island, where authorized vessels depart. 5) Charming Towns and villages At Santa Cruz you can admire groundbreaking buildings like the Auditorio de Tenerife, the International Trade Fair, and Conference Centre, both of which are by Santiago Calatrava, and the TEA, Tenerife Art Space, by Herzog and De Meuron. At La Laguna, a UNESCO world heritage site, traditional mansions and courtyards stand out, just as beautiful as those of other historical centers that are also worth a visit, such as La Orotava, Garachico, and Icod de los Vinos. 6) Cuisine Tenerife's gastronomy has evolved in recent years and has given rise to creative and original cuisine, with quality products such as fresh tuna, bananas, and avocados, all accompanied by local wines, whose history dates back to the 15th century. The grape varietals, the climate, and the Island’s volcanic soil give their wines originality and personality. What’s more, five of the Island’s restaurants have Michelin stars! 7) Stargazing Tenerife’s skies are believed to be some of the best for stargazing, thanks to clean air and clear skies. The prestigious Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (Canary Islands Astrophysics Institute) has its headquarters on the Island, and they have telescopes set up for national and international teams of scientists. Visitors can also enjoy a spot of stargazing. Take a stargazing tour and look through a telescope with a specialist guide. 8) For the Kiddos Tenerife serves up a great time with the youngest members of the household. It has beaches and mountains, and theme parks scattered north to south, where the fun never stops! From Siam Park, a water park with rides and slides for children and adults, to Loro Parque, a zoo with all kinds of animal species. Many establishments have also chosen to focus on families, paying special attention to this group of travelers. 9) Wellness As a holiday destination, Tenerife brings together the best of everything, including an exceptional four- and five-star hotel offering and numerous spas and wellness centers for relaxing, as well as an amazing climate. Relax the pool, enjoy the jets, or have a massage to name a few of the treats that await you at the spa on Tenerife. - Why Vancouver is a Great Place to Visit
If you have never been to Vancouver, you are in for a surprise. It offers something for everyone. Foodies, hikers, bikers, nature lovers, and culture seekers, Vancouver has it all. One of the most livable cities in the world, Vancouver is a breath of fresh air - literally. With the incredible North Shore Mountains as its backdrop, you are sure to be in awe of the majesty of this magical place. Here are the top 9 things to do in Vancouver as a first-timer. But don't stop here there is so much more to do! 1. Capilano Suspension Bridge An Amazing white-knuckle experience. If you have an adventurer's spirit, you'll certainly want to explore one of Vancouver's suspension bridges! The most well-known is Capilano Suspension Bridge, a 460-foot bridge crossing the Capilano River in North Vancouver. Climb through the trees walking along bridges and take in the view. For a more local's experience, venture to Lynn Canyon Park and walk across the bridge. Unlike Capilano, Lynn Canyon Park is a public park and therefore completely free to visit. 2. Granville Island The Public Market on Granville Island is a foodie paradise. Open seven days a week, the indoor market is home to over 50 vendors selling cheese, charcuterie, bread, seafood, and fresh produce, not to mention dozens of prepared food options from pierogies to tacos! A fun way to get to the market is by one of the adorable mini-tugboat ferries that criss-cross False Creek. Of course, you can drive in as well. Another fun market is Lonsdale Quay Market in North Vancouver. Take the ferry from the Waterfront Station to Lonsdale Quay as you take in the great views of Vancouver's skyline. 3. Explore one of North America's oldest Chinatowns One of the largest and oldest Chinatowns in North America, Vancouver Chinatown is a cultural and historic wonderland. Established in the 1890s, this neighborhood is one of the best places in the city to slurp delicious noodles and find rare and ancient remedies at an apothecary. Stop by the Don't miss the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, a beautiful and calm oasis with lily ponds, 150-year-old miniature trees, and graceful pavilions. 4. Visit a local brewery Vancouver's booming craft beer scene means plenty of local breweries producing fantastic ales, lagers, stouts, and pilsners. Many of the city's craft breweries are close to downtown and within easy walking distance of each other - meaning a pub crawl isn't out of the question. You'll also find a handful of breweries in the historic brewery neighborhood of East Van. If you're not into pub crawls, visit a brewpub like Yaletown Brewing Company or CRAFT Beer Market or try the Stanley Park Brewery.. 5. Gastown See where the city began in the historic neighborhood of Gastown. In 1867, Captain John “Gassy Jack” Deighton became one of Vancouver's first settlers and his statue on Water Street stands to this day. After paying your respects, head over to the famous Gastown Steam Clock, one of the very few functioning steam-powered clocks in the world. Despite its Victorian look and feel, the clock was built in 1977 as part of a city revitalization project. Snap a pick by the clock for sure. 6. Kitsilano Beach Bask in the sun on Kitsilano Beach. There might be no better place to spend a warm, sunny day in Vancouver than Kitsilano Beach, known as "Kits" Beach to locals. Located in the fashionable neighborhood of Kitsilano, this beach is a popular place to swim in the cold Pacific water, play a game of volleyball and enjoy a picnic. It also has superb views of Stanley Park and Vancouver's skyline! 7. Stanley Park Stanley Park is one of the world's greatest urban parks and a must-see when you visit Vancouver. Boasting miles of trails, beaches, Canada's largest aquarium, and the biggest Canadian geese this blogger has ever seen. This 1,000-acre park is perhaps best explored on two wheels. Rent a bike from one of the many bike-share stations and get riding! You could also choose to stroll the 17-mile Seawall - the world's longest uninterrupted waterfront path! This park is amazing any time of year. From different points, enjoy spectacular views of Lions Gate Bridge, English Bay, the North Shore Mountains, and the Burrard Inlet. 8. Take a day trip to Whistler on the Sea to Sky Highway Just two hours north of Vancouver is the year-round resort city of Whistler, home to the largest ski resort in North America. You'll take the Sea-to-Sky highway (video above) and relish in the most amazing views from snow-capped mountains, waterfalls, and islands protruding from the Pacific Ocean. Whistler is one of the world's top skiing and snowboarding destinations and offers wonderful views in the summer. Even if you're not visiting during winter, there is still plenty to enjoy including scenic hiking trails, ziplining, shopping, spas, and museums. 9 Take a day trip to Vancouver Island Why not take a day and take a beautiful ferry ride over to Vancouver Island. Stop by Butchart Gardens to see the beautiful displays or drive to Victoria and have a cocktail at the harbor while watching the seaplanes fly in. Add a bucket list activity and have afternoon tea at the Fairmont Empress Hotel. There is plenty to do here for a long weekend from museums, to hiking, spas, whale watching, and people watching. - Make a Layover a Stayover and Spend a Day in Reykjavik
If you have a layover in Iceland, make the layover a stayover and spend at least 24 hours in Iceland. The more time the better. But if you have one only day to spend in Iceland make it count. It is called the land of fire and ice because it has both volcanic and glacial terrain. Here are some things you can do in 24 hours in Reykjavik. Blue Lagoon If you know you're going to be in Iceland be sure to book a ticket in advance for the famous Blue Lagoon, a must-see attraction. Swim in pools of geothermal hot water rich in skin-softening silica, wander over arched bridges leading to small waterfalls and saunas, and watch the sun rise through the steam over snow-covered lava rock surrounding the lagoon. The waters here are said to have healing properties so relax and enjoy. Whether coming straight from the plane or taking a day trip, the Blue Lagoon is sure to revitalize you. Don’t forget your swimsuit when packing. Perlan Museum Next up the Perlan Museum, this striking domed building stands out against the Reykjavik skyline almost as much as Hallgrimskirkja, but with many more attractions inside including interactive displays. Walk through a man-made ice cave, learn about glaciers, visit the planetarium, learn about the aurora, and learn about Iceland's volcanic landscape. You can also head down to the gift shop, the observation deck, or the unique on-site restaurant situated right under the full glass dome. The view of Reykjavik from here is amazing. Hallgrimskirkja This stunning church is easily the most recognizable structure in Reykjavik. With columns leading up the central tower, fitted with a clock that sounds every fifteen minutes, stained glass windows and a monument to Leif Erikson. Guests are even invited to take the elevator up to the very top where they can look out over the entirety of the city sprawled out below them, with Perlan distinguishable on the horizon to the east, and a charming inlet with snowcapped mountains to the northwest. You should be getting hungry about now and Hallgrimskirkja's little square leads directly to a pair of parallel cobblestone streets overflowing with restaurants, shops, cafes, and pubs. You might notice an abundance of Thai restaurants, those looking for a good meal at a fair price should step into Cafe Babalu. The bright orange cafe offers everything from crepes to soups to sandwiches with Icelandic favorites as fillings. Or try a lighter meal at Reykjavik Chips, where you can order snack foods with a delicious Icelandic lager to wash it all down. Museums and Galleries Spend the rest of your day exploring a host of unique museum and galleries including Punk Museum, i8 Gallery, Dead Gallery, Wind and Weather Window Gallery, where both beautiful and quirky art can be admired. Stop by the Viking-like Solfarid monument sitting on the edge of the water as if poised to set sail, Reykjavik is a city just bursting at the seams with fun things to do. Dinner Those with a refined taste might want to stop by Snaps, a low-lit restaurant that offers an exclusive feel that balances between privacy on one end of the restaurant and a classy vibrancy on the other end where the bar is located. A more economical option and a chance for a beer head to Svarta Kaffit, where anyone you can join in the lively atmosphere with a pint and a burger. Northern Lights If you have a car, make your way out from the glare of the city's lights on a clear night and watch the sky. Or take a boat tour from town and head to see the northern lights. When radiation particles from the sun hit the Earth's atmosphere exactly right, a thick band of light stretches across the horizon, causing the phenomenon known as the Northern Lights. Cameras will pick up the light as green, yellow, or sometimes red, purple, and blue, but the light itself can be anything from a pale wisp across the sky to a white band bright enough to read by. You can’t leave Iceland without trying to find the northern lights. It is one of the many reasons so many people go to Iceland every year. Closing Thoughts So, this was a tightly packed 24 hours in Iceland. There is so much more to see including 10,000 waterfalls, national parks, volcanos, ice caves, black sand beaches, and amazing landscape that will simply take your breath away. If you can, make it a vacation and not just a stayover. - Six Great Reasons to Visit Alaska
The 3 main reasons travelers choose Alaska to include, the wildlife, breathtaking views, and the glaciers. The best way to see Alaska is by both land and sea on an Alaska cruise tour. Sail through the inside passage, stop at Glacier Bay national park a UNESCO designated site, see Hubbard Glacier at 76 miles long and 1,200 feet deep, and be on the lookout for the big 5 in wildlife. And let’s not forget the whales! By land, you will see awe-inspiring views of the landscape with snow-covered mountains, valleys and meadows, adorable towns, and Denali National Park. Take a hike or a walking tour through the magnificent scenery with Mt Denali towering above. We want to tell you of the six most significant reasons travelers cruise to The Last Frontier sooner rather than later. 1. You decide which cruise line to take. Sailing in Alaska extends from the middle of May to mid-September. During these months, you won't likely see a shortage of cruise line options from a luxury or expedition-style cruise, something a bit more mainstream, or maybe something a little more unique. 2. Alaska is a desirable location for all ages and tends to be high up on many bucket lists. Families, friends, couples, and groups come here each year to enjoy the beauty of the great state and the broad scope of activities and events. 3. The wildlife is absolutely out of this world. When traveling to Alaska by cruise ship, don't be surprised to spot bear fishing for salmon, whales, eagles, and seals. But the prize is to see the big 5; moose, bears, Dall sheep, caribou, and wolves. 4. Looking for unique experiences? Then dare to go dog sledding or just play with the husky pups all day. Maybe take a helicopter or seaplane to get into the mountains or to land on a glacier. 5. Take a land tour before or after your cruise and hike through the Denali National Park or the Kenai River Valley. Take a fly-fishing class or relax in the middle of a pristine forest and roast some marshmallows. The quiet is just so tranquil. 6. Right now, you can see the nation in all of its iconic glory. From lush forests to enormous glaciers, there is so much to admire. Alaska truly is counted among one of the most awe-inspiring places on Earth, and it's right here in the United States. If you, like almost everyone else, have "visit Alaska" on your bucket list, what are you waiting for? There's no better way to visit the state than by ship, so contact us now to start learning all the cruise line options. Before you know it, you'll have a one-of-a-kind vacation planned that will undoubtedly bring you memories that last a lifetime. - For the Love of Snow
Winter travel ideas for anyone that loves the cold. Winter is not quite the same when you live in Florida. But it is one of the reasons I live here. That said there is something about a blanket of fresh snow that makes me long for those days curled up on the sofa looking out the window with a warm cup of hot chocolate. If you dream of hot chocolate or mulled wine, Christmas markets, and craggy mountain peaks dusted with snow, then you're in luck. Europe has plenty of options when it comes to idyllic destinations. Bundle up and explore a few places you may not have considered to experience that winter feeling. Reykjavik, Iceland There are many reasons to visit Reykjavik, and the rest of Iceland for that matter, in the winter. See the jaw-dropping Northern Lights, enormous glaciers, black sand beaches or gushing waterfalls to name a few. While daylight may be short, there is still plenty of time to discover the natural wonders that seem to come alive in the winter months. And with daylight short, you have a better chance to see the northern lights. Dolomites, Italy Located in the northern Italian Alps, the Dolomites are a UNESCO-certified mountain range that make up the beautiful backdrop in the winter. Offering some of the best mountain adventures in Europe, this region is a unique blend of Austrian and Italian cultures, evident in the food and language. The city of Bolzano is known as the gateway to the Dolomites. Colmar, France If you equate winter with Christmas, then there really is no other place like Colmar in the Alsace region of France. Blending French and German influences, Colmar looks like the pages of a fairy tale town come to life. Visit its famous Christmas market, sip Alsatian wine, and stroll the illuminated streets at night. Zermatt, Switzerland Switzerland is a country of stunning winter escapes, but none are quite as striking as Zermatt, the picturesque village in southern Switzerland sitting at the foot of the world-famous Matterhorn. If your idea of heaven is a day spent skiing or snowboarding, Zermatt is the perfect place to go. The village itself has plenty of charm too, with restaurants serving melty fondue and cozy chalets to warm your bones. Hallstatt, Austria The village of Hallstatt, on Lake Hallstatt's western shore, is a true lakeside beauty in all four seasons. Summer brings an enormous number of visitors, but in the winter, the village quiets down to a calming oasis, with the elegant architecture of Market Square casting reflections in the lake. Bavaria, Germany The spiritual home of Hansel and Gretel is also a wonderful place to visit in the winter. This region in southern Germany is like a world unto itself, with bustling beer halls, charming villages, iconic lakes, and steep mountain ranges. The alpine towns of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Berchtesgaden are both essential places to experience winter in Bavaria. Reine, Norway This tiny fishing village (est. population: 300) on northern Norway’s Lofoten archipelago is a true off-the-beaten-path winter destination. Red and white fisherman's huts dot the shoreline, while the surrounding mountain, Reinebringen, surrounds the area. Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic Cesky Krumlov in the south is one of the most picturesque towns in all of Europe. Like a mini Prague, the city situated on the Vltava River is dominated by the stunning State Castle. Winter is a magical time to visit Cesky Krumlov - the crowds disperse and the whole city gets a light dusting of snow that looks like powdered sugar. Rovaniemi, Finland Known as the "Official Hometown of Santa Claus," Rovaniemi is quite possibly the ultimate winter destination in Europe. The capital of Lapland situated on the Arctic Circle is a winter wonderland of snow-covered forest, quaint houses, and reindeer - yep, in this part of the world, reindeer outnumber people! - The 5 Most Frustrating Mistakes When Booking a Flight
We all want the best flight for the money but it can get tricky. So hopefully this will help you know what to look for when booking your own flights. Watch the video here 1) Booking the Cheapest Flight First Thing Choosing the cheapest flight may not always be the answer or frankly not always the cheapest! There are so many fare classes today from basic economy, economy, premium economy, and so on. However many of the cheaper fares like basic economy have restrictions. These restrictions vary by destination and airline but here are a few restrictions you may discover. You may be required to pay for checked bags, even with "their" credit card. This can actually make an upgrade cheaper in some cases depending on the number of bags. You may not be allowed a carry-on bag You can't sit with your family or friends because you can't choose your seats. Your ticket may not be refundable OR changeable. 2) Not Considering the Number of Connections Always look at the number of flight segments. Do you have a direct flight? One-stop? Two stops? The cheaper the fare, the more connections. This can work to your advantage if you don't mind the connections. There are times when you will transit from one airport to another. My most frequent airport change is Heathrow and Gatwick. So you arrive in Heathrow, transit to Gatwick, then fly home. It's doable but in my book, quite the hassle. You will need 3-4 hours to even though it is only 30-40 minutes away. Do you want to have one more thing to worry about? The key here is to look for this, you might miss it if you are looking at times or dates but not the airport. 3) Forgetting to Check the Arrival Date and Time Are you arriving in time for a cruise or tour? If so, make sure you arrive early enough to catch transportation. IF transportation is provided, make sure you know the times it is offered, Many times it is offered only a few times a day and at set times. Make sure to check that you arrive ON THE RIGHT DAY. Flights to and from Europe may have an extra day built-in. When flying to Europe you will usually fly overnight and arrive the next day. Flying home varies but makes sure you check that date. 4) Forgetting About Airport Transit Time Always check the time you are transiting through an airport especially in Europe. If you are passing through the UK on your way home from France, you still need to get in line at passport control to show your passport. You won't deal with customs, which is usually at your final destination but always watch tight schedules. What if the plane is late? Even in the US, you take a chance. I try to allow 45 minutes to 1.0 hour on domestic flights and 1.5-2.0 hours international depending on the size of the airport and if they are known for delays. 5) Not Considering the Timing When You Buy and When You Fly When is the best time to buy a ticket? I'm asked this all the time. The correct answer used to be as early as possible but now, not so much. Prices fluctuate based on how they are selling. The best time now seems to be between within 6 months of travel but not less than 2-3 weeks prior or prices will be at a premium. Day of the Week to Purchase - Purchasing over the weekend when everyone else is buying flights is a no-no. Day of the Week to Travel - Everyone travels on the weekend. If you can travel during the week you may find the best prices. Also, consider which day is the least busy at the destination airport. You will get better flights, through customs faster, and a usually better price. For Hotels, Compare Day of Week with a Saturday Stay. - If you are staying a Saturday you're covered. If not, compare the two, sometimes you will get a good rate at a hotel just for staying a Saturday then compare that with the air and weekday stay. A little math might save you here too. Time of Day to Fly - I don't know about you, but I really hate flying early. But guess what is the best time to fly? Yep, early morning. When I search flights, they are almost always the best rates. A Note About Using Search Engines Search engines allow you to look at a variety of airlines at once and some allow alerts to let you know when prices might be going up. They are designed for inexpensive flights so watch the items mentioned in this article. Not all airlines are on all search engines so be aware that you may find a better price going direct. A Note About Using a Travel Advisor Sure, you can book your flights yourself and some travel advisors don't book air only anyway. But, if you are working with a travel advisor for your trip, they likely will pull the entire trip together for you using this information to get you the best rate, flight, and eliminate as much hassle as possible. Plus, travel advisors may have access to special discounts both individually and more commonly with groups. So, I know I've given you a lot to think about. The key is to take your time, double-check everything, don't jump at the best rate, do the math, and see what works best for you. I'd love to hear your suggestions too. Just drop a message below.
