- The Big Five
Animals you must see on a game drive. So let's start with Safari versus Game Drive. They can be used interchangeably but a game drive is with the specific intent to see the animals. The goal of many trips to areas within Africa is to see the Big Five. The term came from big-game hunters referring to the most difficult and most dangerous animals to hunt on foot. Thank goodness, it now is primarily used to identify these large animals in the crosshairs of a camera. The big five range from “least concern” to “endangered” according to the IUCN, International Union of Conservation of Nature. One comment about game drives. Game drives are a wonderful way to see the Big Five. As always follow the guidance of your guide. They know where the animals are, what to do, and most importantly, what not to do. So which animals are considered to be the big five and where do you find them? Let’s find out. African Bush Elephant The African bush elephant, also called the African Savannah Elephant, is listed as an “endangered” species. Considered a predator of these majestic creatures, poachers hunt them for their long, curved ivory tusks. They are the biggest of the elephants and stand 13 feet tall and weigh up to 11 tons. As herbivores, elephants can be quite destructive to the plant life around them by ripping foliage from the trees in order to consume up to 350 pounds of food per day. Next to humans, they are the longest living mammals, living up to 70 years. Most live in herds of up to 100 elephants and seeing a herd can be exhilarating. However, seeing a lone bull elephant requires some distance as they can be unpredictable and may decide to charge. Elephants are very protective of their young, they will charge predators if they feel the baby elephant is in danger. The best time to see them is dry season when they are around the watering holes to drink. Many accommodations will provide views so that you can watch them from a deck or your sleeping quarters. Chobe National Park in Botswana has the largest elephant population in Africa. Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe also has a large population, and the scenic park is excellent for photography. Fun Fact: Many plant species have evolved seeds that are dependent on passing through an elephant's digestive tract before they can germinate. At least one third of tree species in West African forests rely on elephants in this way for dissemination. African elephants communicate across large distances at a low frequency that cannot be heard by humans. Black Rhinoceros Between 1960 and 1995 Black Rhinos lost 98% of their population from poachers. Due to extensive conservation efforts, the population has climbed to 5,600 yet they remain "endangered". Poached for their horns, which is illegal, very few exist outside of national parks and reserves. To see them, choose an eco-tourism property such as Grootberg Lodge, in Namibia which offers day drives with ex-poachers now employed as guides. Going on a tour with an ex-poacher in the heart of rhino territory is an essential African wild animal experience. Fun Fact: Rhinos have poor vision and will sometimes attack trees and rocks thinking they are a threat. Their hearing and sense of smell, however, are excellent, making up for their poor eyesight. African Buffalo Considered of “least concern” by the IUCN, these buffalo group together in a herd to help protect themselves from their primary predators, lions. They can be aggressive if wounded or when trying to save another member of the herd when caught. They are strong enough to grab a lion with their horns and flip them in the air. Constantly on the move searching for fresh grass and water, watering holes are a great place to find them. Kavati National Park in western Tanzania is famous for huge herds of buffalo. Prepare yourself as you might just see a few fights with the lions. Kruger National Park has buffalo sightings as well. Fun Fact: The African buffalo, unlike the water buffalo, has never been domesticated. Lion Considered of “least concern” by the IUCN, these buffalo group together in a herd to help protect themselves from their primary predators, lions. Now, conservancies are working together with the villages to save the lions. Spotting a lion in the wild is on top of many bucket lists. Both fear and excitement take over when lions appear in the distance or even walking by the jeep. The largest of all cats, these fierce predators live in small prides led by one male lion. Without fear of other animals and no need to hide, they are the easiest to see on a game drive. As nocturnal hunters, the best time to see them is during the day while resting under a tree, at dawn as they return from the hunt, or at dusk when they are beginning the hunt. The Serengeti and Masai Mara are ideal big cat country; Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania has one of the highest densities of lion in the world, and Okavango have some of the biggest lions. Fun Fact: Typically, the darker a lion’s mane, the older he is. Leopard Among the most elusive of the Big Five, these beautiful and stealthy creatures are in the “vulnerable” category with dwindling numbers. They hide well in the tall grass and high in the trees and are wary of humans. For the best chance to see a leopard, take an organized game drive with a guide who knows the area well and can spot them for you. With conservation efforts boosting the leopard population, the wide-open plains of Masai Mara and South Luangwa in Zambia are great destinations. One of the best locations to spot leopards is in Sabi Sands in South Africa. As a private reserve the rangers can keep the young leopards safe, adding to the population. Fun Fact: Leopards are excellent at climbing trees. They’ll often safeguard their kill in a tree to prevent lions and hyenas from stealing it. They are also strong swimmers and occasionally eat fish and crabs. Cheetah While not one of the big five, seeing a cheetah in the wild is such a great thrill, it had to be included as a bonus to the big five. Considered "vulnerable", the sleekest and fastest land animal on earth, the cheetah is hard to spot due to its small population. Cheetahs hunt during the day to avoid larger predators and they chase their game at high speeds across open grasslands. Early and mid-morning game drives provide the best opportunities to spot the cheetah in action. Head to the wide-open plains where the lack of vegetation means they can race across the area at top speed. While the big five are what many want to there are so many amazing animals to see such as Zebra, Giraffe, Hippopotamus, Hyena, African Wild Dog, Warthog, Kudu, and the most beautiful bird species you can only imagine. If you get the chance, take it, it is the experience of a lifetime. More Animals to see on a game drive. - Tips on Visiting the Colosseum in Rome
The Colosseum is such an icon in Rome. You've always wanted to see it in person, and that time has finally come! With new sections opened to the public, now is a great time to go. Here are some tips to follow when you go. Get there early (or late) As with many sights, there are two magical times during the day when the line isn't so bad. As long as you get there before it opens or about an hour or two before the site closes, you shouldn't experience a long waiting time. One tidbit about going late in the day, the Colosseum closes at different times throughout the year depending on time the sun sets. Be sure to check closing time before visiting. I'm sure you have heard about the skip-the-line tickets, and they are great, however, there may be a line for the skip-the-line tickets too. You will likely still get in faster than the masses with these tickets but understand that it doesn't always mean you get to walk in front of everyone. This blogger personally waited 45 minutes for Versailles with skip-the-line tickets. It was worth it. Book in Advance Booking a tour is a pro's way of skipping the line. No long wait and a knowledgeable guide? Count me in. If decide to book on your own make sure you do it online and in advance. As you arrive you'll find many people offering tours and each one offers "the best" tour. While these people aren't necessarily scammers, they usually charge much more than a tour you can find online. It is last minute after all. We recommend tours rather than doing this on your own because the history behind what you're witnessing is truly fascinating. Cost At the time of this writing, the standard admission is 12 euros. If you purchase tickets online in advance, there is an extra fee of 2 euros. What's included Standard tickets grant you admission to The Colosseum, Palatine Hill, and the Roman Forum. Make sure you budget time for all three! Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum are fascinating and they offer stunning views of the Colosseum. Free Entry On the first Sunday of every month, entrance to the Colosseum (and many other government-managed sites in Europe) are free. But, free admission means more crowded and longer lines. Ask yourself which is more important, long lines or a few extra euros, then decide. How to get there The Colosseum can easily be reached on foot or by public transportation from anywhere in central Rome. By metro, take Line B By bus, take Bus #75 By tram, take Line 3 Another option: if you spring for a hop-on/hop-off bus tour during your trip, it will almost definitely make a stop at the Colosseum. Since it's already embedded in the price of the tour ticket, use it as transportation! Arrive Prepared This is no time to risk discomfort. Chances are, you'll probably only see the Colosseum once in your life! We cannot stress this enough: wear comfortable shoes. Don't think "eh, I'll be fine! I wanna look cute, I'm in Italy after all." Been there, done that, never again. The beautiful thing about these sites is that they are ancient. This means the ground is not perfectly flat! In the Colosseum - and especially in the Forum and on Palatine Hill - you'll find rocky, uneven ground that can be challenging at times. The "I broke my ankle at the Colosseum" story isn't that fun. Be aware large backpacks and luggage are not allowed inside! Weather Make sure you keep an eye on the weather forecast before you go. Chance of rain? Bring a poncho. Sunny day? Bring a hat and wear sunblock. You'll be exposed to the elements and sorry if you don't come prepared. How much time should we spend there? It usually takes 2 - 4 hours to hit all three ancient sites (the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill). This is another reason to go early - a few hours spent at the Colosseum in the morning means you still have most of the day to explore. Go on a Full Stomach While there are a few restaurants in the surrounding area, there is no food served at the Colosseum or in the Forum. You will be doing a good amount of walking, so you want to make sure you've had something substantial before visiting. The last thing you want to remember about visiting an iconic site is how you couldn't wait to leave so you could find lunch. Watch Your Wallet The Colosseum is a crowded tourist attraction in one of the world's most visited cities. Just like we'd recommend around any tourist attraction in any big city, be careful. See the Colosseum at Night For a completely different experience, simply walk or drive by the Colosseum in the evening as it becomes illuminated against the dark night sky. Maybe find a nice restaurant with a view of it in the distance. Many sites in Rome, especially the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, and St. Peter's Basilica, look stunning all lit up at night. Do yourself a favor and experience them in the light and in the dark. So take these tips to heart and you'll have an amazing trip to the Colesseum in Rome! - What to Wear on a Safari in Kenya
Clothing Considerations Safaris are all about neutral. The secret is to go unnoticed by the wildlife for as long as possible. By keeping clothing colors as neutral and as light as possible, you will blend in better with the surrounding environment. Think Khaki, beige, light brown, and green as the best color palette for a safari. Aside from standing out to the animals, much like bright flowers draw the bees, darker and brighter clothing will attract unwanted mosquitoes, tsetse flies, and insects. Although you may be staying in luxury, meals are informal, so smart attire is not required Comfortable is the name of the game in the bush. And you will want lightweight breathable clothing. Cotton is perfect but the lightweight wicking fabrics if you like them, will work. That said, ditch the bright white t-shirt and wear something that blends in. For the evenings or on bush walks, a long sleeve neutral-colored shirt will serve to help with mosquitos and keeps the chill off at night. You'll experience nighttime game drives so long sleeves and long pants are a must. While we are on long pants, try the zip-off legs so that you will have both shorts and long pants. Layering is great for early morning or evening. Don't forget a jacket, and quite possibly a scarf, once that African sun goes down, it can get quite chilly., If you are traveling during the rainy season, make sure you wear a raincoat or something to keep you dry. Pro Tip: It is illegal in some areas to wear camouflage clothing and in others, it will draw unwanted attention so it is best to stick with one color. Shoes Let's talk hiking boots for a minute. You really don't want to have to pack these in your suitcase. The good news is, generally speaking, a good pair of sneakers or other sturdy closed-toed shoes will be fine for the hikes and game drives. Hiking sneakers would work too but remember it is likely to be hot during the day and you don't want the added issue of hot, heavy shoes so pick a pair that are light and comfortable. Sandals or flip-flops will work for around the lodge. Your head You will need a hat. Remember, you are on the equator in Kenya. Everyone will have one to protect their face and eyes from the sun and the heat. It will also make game viewing easier. Make sure it has a brim and not just a baseball cap if your ears burn. Don't forget your sunglasses. If they are polarized all the better. If you wear glasses, bring an extra pair. It is very dusty so bring extra contact lens cleaner or a few extra pairs of lenses if you change them frequently. Your Bags Welcome to my world of overpacking. I have tried my best to avoid this and have found the answer. One of the great things about many of these lodges and camps is that they will wash your laundry. It is definitely worth the money. Bring a few pairs of shorts, pants, and shirts and wash them. Add undergarments, socks, jacket, swimsuit, and a layer of two and you are good to go. Pro tip: bring enough undergarments, they will not wash them or anything complicated. Leave the favorite silk at home. Checked bags are tricky. Most safaris allow a bag and carry-on but fly-in safaris will not allow hard-sided luggage, hard frame, or wheels. Always check before you being your packing. Like every other vacation pack, some clothing and important items in a carry-on just in case your suitcase is lost. African safaris have so much to offer with the small villages, incredible animals, stunning views, and amazing sunsets. Dressing appropriately is not about fashion but comfort, experience, and protection. With a little prep, you can enjoy all of this and not have too much laundry to do when you get home. - The Dolomites of Northern Italy
Do you need to get away? I mean really get away. If you've never heard of the Dolomites, you're not alone. But once you see them you will never forget. Tucked away in the northern Italian Alps, this mountain range in South Tyrol boasts jaw-dropping scenery, amazing hiking paths, colorful villages, and crystal-clear alpine lakes. Whether you love the outdoors, travel for culture, food, and wine, or just the quiet and tranquility, the Dolomites area should top your travel bucket list. Ortisei Ortisei is in South Tyrol, a province in northeastern Italy. Val Gardena is a valley within South Tyrol that is home to three villages, with Ortisei being the largest. Visitors to Ortisei can learn more about the history, culture, and nature of Val Gardena at the museum de Gherdëina. While there is not an airport in Ortisei itself, the village is easily accessible from nearby airports. Fly into Bolzano, Italy and you’ll get to Ortisei via car in approximately one hour. If traveling from abroad, Verona and Milan are the international airports in Italy. Another option would be Innsbruck International Airport in Austria, which is the largest in the Tyrol region. Visitors can expect partly cloudy skies year-round in Ortisei. Summer months bring rain and winter months bring freezing temperatures. On average, the temperature ranges from 17 to 65 degrees so pack layers. Winter months bring snow and many opportunities to ski, while the summer months are a perfect time to hike the hundreds of miles of trails! If rain falls during your visit, retreat to one of the many spas or wellness centers in town. The center of the village is home to excellent shopping and dining. There is something for everyone at any time of year! Romantic Lakes Imagine the tranquility of rowing a boat through Pragser Wildsee. Peaceful, romantic, and stunningly beautiful. If you need to unplug and de-stress, this is the place to do it. A multitude of lakes means so much to see. These blue-green gems pop up all over South Tyrol! The most visited are: Pragser Wildsee, Lake Misurina, Toblacher See, Lago Sorapis, Karersee, Dürrensee, and Lake Molveno. Colorful Towns The colorful towns surrounding the Dolomites may feel more like a fairytale than real life. Did someone say ski season? The Dolomites range only gets better in the snow and South Tyrol bursts to life in the wintry months, with vibrant holiday markets and cozy lodges in nearby villages. Hiking and Biking The Dolomite range is synonymous with adventure. The hilly, aromatic alpine roads make incredible hiking and biking paths! And, if you ask me, a little exercise means a little more gnocchi and ravioli come dinner time. Bordering Austria If you're thinking, "that looks like a scene from The Sound of Music," you're not wrong. In fact, the Dolomites are located on the border of Austria, where much of the classic movie was filmed! Because Austria's just a hop, skip, and jump away, you'll notice lots of Austrian influence in the food and architecture in South Tyrol's villages. In addition to being well-known for skiing and hiking, Ortisei is also famous for its emphasis on health and wellbeing. With the village being so deeply immersed in nature, many of the spas believe that relaxation treatments are the perfect complement to the landscape here. Saunas, massages, and beauty treatments of the highest quality are available to you in Ortisei. What better way to fully embrace a vacation here than with physical outdoor activities, mental relaxation, and a little pampering? - Food You Must Try in Italy
Italy is well known for its gastronomy, and some of the most famous food regularly appears on menus outside of Italy. Everyone has their favorite Italian dishes and here are a few I think you should try the next time you find yourself in Italy. Full disclosure, I'm a bit heavy on the sweets! Pasta What list of Italian food would be complete without pasta? But, when it comes to trying pasta in Italy, a general rule to follow is to make sure you try the regional variations on the menu. Below you will find a few types of pasta to try. This way you will really understand why pasta is so special to Italians. And you’ll also see the importance of using local ingredients to enhance these dishes. Tortellini en Brodo This is the way I grew up eating tortellini. A staple from the north of Italy, it is quite often eaten over the holidays. The tortellini is served in a simple broth as opposed to a creamy sauce. And it’s topped with some grated Parmesan. Like so many of Italy’s traditional dishes, it is simple, yet delicious. Tagliatelle al ragù This dish is native to Bologna. It is almost identical to what you may otherwise know as Spaghetti Bolognese. But in Italy, you will never find Spaghetti Bolognese on the menu and you will never ever find ragù served with spaghetti. Instead, it is only served with Tagliatelle. This pasta pairs much better with the sauce. Focaccia di Recco When it comes to Italian food to try when visiting Italy, you simply have to try some Focaccia di Recco. It is comfort food in a blanket! It’s a regional dish from Recco in the region of Genoa. As with many dishes mentioned, it’s simple. It’s made from a thin layer of focaccia baked with a layer of creamy crescenza cheese in the middle. Modest and so delicious. Arancini This is a dish of fried rice balls that are coated in breadcrumbs. The fillings have a variety of regional variations from ragù, mushrooms mozzarella, or even ham. It’s a classic Italian dish available all over the country. Pizza So, yeah, I have to mention pizza. Hands down the best place to eat pizza is in Naples. A Neapolitan pizza is the style of pizza that immigrants took with them to places like the US and it’s iconic in Italy too. In Italy, this style of pizza will be baked in a wood-fired oven. The dough and ingredients will pass the rules that govern traditional Neapolitan pizzas. The toppings will be far simpler and more sparse, thereby allowing the natural and local ingredients to shine through, and it might even be a bit soupy in the middle. To widen your experience of Italian food in Italy, try some other varieties from street vendors and small bakeries in Italy. Gelato And now for some sweets! The Italians did a great job of introducing gelato to the countries they emigrated to. But like many other Italian exports, gelato in Italy is a cut above what you find outside Italy. Granita Aside from gelato, granita is the best way to cool down during the heat of a Sicilian summer. Made with water, sugar, and fruit or nuts, it’s slowly frozen and stirred continuously, resulting in a consistency somewhere in between the creaminess of gelato and the granularity of sorbet. In past centuries, it was made with the snow that fell on Mount Etna and derives from the Arab sherbet made with rose water. Nowadays, you can find dozens of flavors, but the most traditional ones are almond, pistachio, coffee, and lemon. Sicilians start their day by dunking a brioche into granita for breakfast, but it can be eaten throughout the day. Torrone A nougat made with honey, egg whites and toasted nuts, is a heaven to the taste buds and a must-try when in Italy. The main difference between what we know as nougat is the sugar versus the Italian use of honey. Sardinia in the town of Tonara is the production capital of torrone. You’ll find it in many cafes and sweet shops around Italy. Bonet This rich, chocolate pudding is served throughout Piedmont, especially in the Langhe hills around Alba. Eaten with a spoon, it’s made like a crème caramel, with crumbled amaretti cookies, eggs, sugar, cocoa, milk, and rum. It’s sometimes served with hazelnuts, which grow in the region. The exact origins of bonet are unknown, but there are references it being served at noble banquets during the 13th century. Pro Tip: Turin’s Farmacia del Cambio, an elegant bar/pasticceria inside a pharmacy that dates back to 1833, is one of the best places to try bonet, but you’ll also see it on menus across the region. Sfogliatella Found in bakeries and cafés around Naples and the Amalfi Coast, this flaky pastry is shaped a bit like a seashell or a lobster tail (there’s a version called coda d’aragosta, meaning lobster tail) and filled with ricotta scented with citrus peel and cinnamon. There are two types of dough; a smooth or a curly version. Legend has it that they were invented by a nun at the cloistered convent of Santa Rosa in the village of Conca dei Marini on the Amalfi Coast. Panna Cotta Literally translating to “cooked cream,” this soft, silky pudding is as simple as it gets. The main ingredients are heavy cream, sugar, vanilla, and gelatin, which get blended and then set in a refrigerator for a few hours or overnight. Amazing, right? It’s believed to originate in Piedmont, though it didn’t enter the mainstream until the 1960s. Often garnished with a fruit coulis or perhaps fresh fruit, it can be found in restaurants and hotels across Italy. Cannoli One of Italy’s best-known desserts, cannoli or cannolo, if it isjust one. It originated in Sicily, but can be found all over the country and beyond. The tube-shaped dessert is made of fried pastry dough filled with whipped ricotta sweetened with sugar and candied orange. You’ll sometimes see versions featuring pistachios, chocolate chips, or candied cherries. Their origin can be traced back to the 10th or 11th century, when Arabs ruled Sicily. Tiramisu Perhaps the most iconic Italian dessert, tiramisu appears on menus at restaurants not only throughout Italy but also all over the world. An irresistible combination of layers of coffee-soaked savoiardi and mascarpone whipped with sugar and eggs, topped with cacao powder, it’s either served as slices like a cake or in individual glasses or cups. Its origins are hotly contested between the regions of Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, although the Italian government has officially recognized it as a product of Friuli—a bit surprising, since its name translates to “pick-me-up” in the dialect of Veneto. Pro tip: Bar Pompi is the self-declared king of tiramisu and has versions flavored with strawberry, pistachio, or hazelnut as well as the classic tiramisu. It has six locations in Rome, including one near the Spanish Steps and another near the Trevi Fountain, plus a location in Florence. Delizia al limone Invented in 1978 by pastry chef Carmine Marzuillo, who worked at the hotel Parco dei Principi in Sorrento, this delightful little cake makes use of the lemons that the area is famous for. Shaped like a dome, it’s composed of sponge cake filled with lemon cream, soaked in limoncello, and topped with pale yellow icing. Usually eaten at the end of a meal, it can be found at restaurants and in pasticcerie all over the Campania region. Maritozzo A sweet that’s found almost exclusively in Rome, the maritozzo is a soft bun split down the middle and filled with whipped cream. Its origins can be traced all the way back to ancient Rome, but it became popular during the Middle Ages, when the church allowed it to be eaten during the fasting days of Lent. Its name derives from the word marito, which means husband, and during the 19th century, men would propose by hiding a ring in a maritozzo. So next time you are in Italy, make sure to try one of these wonderful dishes. There are so many more but this is a wonderful place to start! - River Cruising FAQ
Is this your first river cruise or maybe just first in a while? River cruising is not about the ship, it is about where you go and that makes it very different from an ocean cruise. Coach or private tours will take you to many places but you must change hotels frequently. River cruises are an amazing blend that allows you to call one place home yet see many different cities and even countries. We have prepared a list of the most often asked questions about river cruising. Keep in mind that the responses are not specific to any one river cruise line. Your travel advisor will help with specifics on the lines. If I get seasick on boats or on ocean cruise ships, will I get seasick on the rivers? It is not likely, the rivers are calm and the ships experience no waves or rocking which is the primary reason for motion sickness. River ships move slowly and you can see the riverbanks as you travel. Which meals and beverages are included in the fare? Breakfast, lunch, and dinner during your river cruise will be included while onboard. Unless it is included in an excursion, you will provide your own meal while in the towns you visit. Lunch and dinner include wine, beer, and soft drinks on most lines. When you select a pre-stay or post-stay as part of a land package, generally breakfast is included. For pre or post land packages more meals may be included. A few lines have beverage packages, most include drinks, including wine and beer, with meals and at times throughout the day. Pro tip: If you love wine, take a river cruise and explore various wines both while onboard during talks and tastings and on excursions. The beer experiences in Belgium and Germany are quite fun! Do I make dinner reservations or are there set times for meals? Breakfast and lunch are offered during a range of times 7:00 to 9:00am for example where dinner onboard is usually in one sitting per meal and no reservations are needed. Seats are generally not assigned, you choose where to sit. Some ships have a specialty dining experience which would require reservations but may or may not be included in the price. Can you accommodate my food allergies/dietary restrictions? This one is a bit harder. The answer is yes but it depends on the restriction. Some are great at it, others can accommodate the restrictions but the food is average. Can I begin wine onboard? Most of the time yes. In some cases you may drink it at dinner with a corkage fee, in other cases, it is for your consumption within your room Is there a Gym Onboard? Many ships have some type of exercise available. Some have treadmills, ellipticals, or stationary bikes, as well as an assortment of free weights. Many will offer complimentary onboard wellness activities like yoga. Many ships in Europe include a fleet of bikes for you to use on your own or with guided bike tours. They may be complementary or rentals. Do I have to take the excursions offered by the river cruise line or can I explore on my own? The wonderful thing about river cruises is that you dock right in or near the town. You are free to explore the city on your own. Shore excursions are included on river cruises so the choice is yours. The number of complimentary excursions varies by the cruise line and some cruise lines offer optional excursions as well. Pro tip: make sure you know what time to be back on the ship if you are wandering on your own or you will be required to find you way to the next port. What is the dress code? This varies by cruise line but a general rule is to plan to pack attire that is “Country Club Casual” and something a little dressier to wear to the Captain’s Dinner or an evening concert. Bring comfortable walking shoes for shore excursions and one pair of dressier shoes. You may be traveling through different climates and altitudes, so layering is advisable. Europe can be quite warm in the summer, so short sleeve shirts, shorts, skirts, sundresses, and a wide-brimmed hat are good items to pack. Bring a raincoat and warm sweater for chilly evenings, especially in the spring and fall, and warmer clothing and a heavy coat for winter cruises. Is there a formal night? This would be unusual on a river cruise. Is there a doctor on board? There are no doctors on board but you are close to shore your entire cruise. Should the need arise arrangements can be made with the assistance of ship's crew to get you to a doctor. The cost is at your own expense. Is there Wifi Onboard? Yes, and sometimes it is complementary, and sometimes not. Depending on where you are traveling on the cruise there may be spotty reception, for example, when in Africa on the Chobe River or while passing through the locks. Are the ships wheelchair accessible? Some are but it is not ideal. Elevators may not go to all of the floors, if they have an elevator and disembarking at the port may be difficult. When traveling in Europe, they do not have ADA standards like in the US so some excursions may not be available or difficult to manage. Each river cruise line is different. When talking with your travel advisor make sure to discuss what you like to do on vacation. If it is cuisine, for example, your advisor will know which river cruise line is known for cuisine or foodie experiences. The more you tell your advisor, the better you experience will be.
