So, you’re in Portofino, but you’ve only got a day. We’ve got you covered. Here’s a little bit of background on Portofino, followed by the best plan for taking on Portofino, Italy in only one day. Established in 23AD, Portofino is a fishing village and tourist attraction famous for its gorgeous harbor, which is surrounded by colorful buildings. Portofino has been the filming location for a number of movies and is the inspiration behind the Mediterranean Harbor at Tokyo’s DisneySea in Chiba, Japan. Here are some tips for Portofino in a day:
To See
Begin your day at the Piazzetta Portofino, which has been the site of movies including The Wolf of Wall Street and Murder Mystery. Enjoy the row houses in this historic venue, then check out the shops and grab a snack at one of the restaurants before heading over to the Church of San Martino. Built in the 12th century, this church contains a long staircase with decorative vaults and highlights works by artists of all ages.
To Experience
Be sure not to miss the Oratory of Santa Maria Assunta and the Church of San Giorgio. Their Gothic and Romanesque architecture, respectively, are awe-inspiring. About a ten-minute walk later, you’ll come to Castle Brown Portofino, the Brown Castle. Dating back to the 1400s, the castle was renovated in the late 1800s by Sir Brown, transitioning it from a military stronghold to a one-of-a-kind home. The castle, surrounded by Mediterranean gardens and pergolas, has lots of rooms to explore and houses many paintings. Pay attention to the stairs and roof as you enjoy the 360-degree panoramic views from the terrace.
To Do
If exercise is on the agenda, consider climbing to The Monte di Portofino. Beginning at the beach of paraggi, trek through Mediterranean forests filled with wildlife and architectural ruins. Once you reach the 600-meter peak, the highest peak of the promontory, you’ll be greeted by some of the most gorgeous views in all of Portofino. See seas, some of which are only accessible by foot, and take in the fresh air before beginning your descent.
To Eat
After all of that activity, you’ll no doubt be in the market for something to eat. Three of the best restaurants in all of the Portofino area are Restaurant Puny, Taverna del Marinaio, and Cucina de Nonna Nina. At Restaurant Puny, one of Portofino’s most renowned restaurants, you can dine inside in one of their stylish dining rooms or outside under adorable gazebos. Enjoy fresh-caught fish cooked in the traditional manner. Suggestion: Sea bass in puff pastry. Taverna del Marinaio has a 25-year history of serving appetizers and main courses consisting of fresh fish. While the quality is excellent, the prices are affordable, making this a nice family option. Finally, for a more rustic experience, try Cucina de Nonna Nina in San Rocco. Enjoy homemade pasta with pesto, fish or rabbit, but don’t leave without eating the lemon tart. The aroma alone is worth going for.
Whether you’re interested in history, food, landscape, hiking, wildlife, or shopping, you are sure to be satisfied in Portofino. The sea views are second to none, and the fresh fish, taken from the sea, masterfully prepared, and delivered right to your table can’t be beat.
