But there is so much more!
Too Much to See, Not Enough Time, that is Munich. From old to new, the zoo to the Victory Gate, and the many churches and museums, there is far too much to narrow it down to 3 only but here is my best shot. My advice, take some time in Munich if you can and enjoy the culture, history, and fun Munich has to offer.
Dating back to the 1100s, Munich, Germany is now a modern city that boasts a population of over 1.5 million people. Munich is the capital of Bavaria and sits along both sides of the River Isar (a Danube tributary), making it easily accessible by river and the perfect spot for an excursion from a river cruise. You will fly into Munich for the start of many cruises before transiting to your port. Though it was heavily bombed during WWII, Munich has been restored. It is now a mix of the old and the new, as much of Munich’s economy is based on the modern-day, high-tech industry. Here is a list of the top three things to do in Munich in a day:
1. Oktoberfest – In Munich, Oktoberfest is so popular that it is often referred to as the 5th season. Every year, Oktoberfest, which is called Weisn in Munich, brings in over 6 million visitors who consume over 6 million liters of beer. This annual festival occurs in late September and early October and was originally held to celebrate the marriage of King Ludwig I of Bavaria. Before you go, be sure to do your research on how to properly enter a tent, how to best survive the 14-hour days, and why Oktoberfest beer is stronger than regular beer. PROST!
2. Viktualienmarkt – From a Latin word meaning, “groceries,” Viktualienmarkt is Munich’s oldest market, dating back to 1807. It is open every day except Sundays and holidays. While there are typical grocery items like fruits, vegetables, and meats, at Viktualienmarkt, you’ll also find flower stands and Bavarian snack stands. In the center of the market is a beer garden that serves beer from all six Bavarian breweries. If you love honey, be sure to check out the stand which sells anything and everything related to honey.
3. Sankt Peter – Sankt Peter, or Altar Peter, is the oldest church in Munich. Originally begun in the 12th century, Sankt Peter was completely destroyed during WWII but rebuilt thanks to the generous donations of many soon afterward. While the interior of the building is absolutely stunning, the Sankt Peter tower, which is at the top of 300 stairs, is the real draw, as it gives you some of the best views of Munich. On a clear day, you’ll even see the Alps in the distance.
If more modern sites are what you’re looking for, be sure to check out Olympiapark, the site of the 1972 Olympic games which is still functional today. Another contemporary site is the Allianz Arena Stadium, a modern wonder with its color-changing panels which can hold 75,000 soccer fans. No matter whether you choose the historical or the contemporary, the beer gardens or the markets, Munich has something for everyone.
