  • Skogafoss Waterfall

Location: Iceland Great for: Singles, Couples, Families, Groups, Hikers, and Honeymooners I love all the waterfalls and there are many in Iceland flowing seemingly from nowhere. They are the Starbucks of the natural world. Just look at the mountains and you will see one before long cascading down the side. Waterfalls are everywhere in Iceland. Skogafoss in southern Iceland is one of the waterfalls I was so excited to see and it did not disappoint. The waterfall comes from 2 glaciers; Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull. It is a massive 197 feet tall and regularly produces a double rainbow on sunny days. As you approach Skogafoss, you will follow a small stream to your left, walking on black volcanic soil and stones leading up to it. You will feel the spray of the water. Remember the packing guide tip about waterproof clothes? This is why. The roar of the falls is incredible! As it demonstrates its mighty force, I felt exhilarated to see such an imposing force. It is magnificent to behold and must be seen in person to truly grasp its power and immensity. Visitors appear the size of tiny ants compared to it. There is a Viking legend of a chest of gold hidden under the falls and it is said that one person tried to retrieve it but was only able to bring the chest handle back. If you want to go to the top of the falls, there are 370 steps to get there. I’m told the best view is from the bottom but I'd love to hear from anyone that went to the top. The view of the surrounding area has to be stunning. Some of the stairs are steep so it is not recommended if you have limitations with walking or climbing. Around the falls like almost everywhere in Iceland you will see sheep grazing. In addition to Skogafoss, you will see other falls off to the side. Give yourself at least an hour to take it all in. If you decide to climb to the top you'll need at least an extra 30 minutes. There are some things in life that take your breath away. Skogafoss water did that for me. • 5 Reasons to Visit Seljalandsfoss Waterfall - Iceland

Location: Iceland Great for: Singles, Couples, Groups, Families, and Honeymoons Watch the video below Seljalandsfoss is a stunning waterfall located in southern Iceland, about 75 miles east of the capital city of Reykjavik. It is one of the country's most famous and photographed waterfalls due to its unique feature of allowing visitors to walk behind the cascading water. The waterfall is so beloved that even Icelanders visit Seljalandsfoss waterfall, as it is an extraordinary natural wonder right in their own country. Many Icelanders enjoy exploring the beautiful and rugged landscape of their country, and Seljalandsfoss is a great destination for a day trip or weekend getaway. Locals may also visit the waterfall to take part in outdoor activities, such as hiking, photography, or simply to enjoy the peaceful surroundings and stunning views. Additionally, Seljalandsfoss is located near several other popular attractions in southern Iceland, such as Skógafoss waterfall and the black sand beaches of Vik, which makes it a great part of a larger travel itinerary for both tourists and locals alike. It's no surprise that Seljalandsfoss is also a favorite spot for photographers, both amateur and professional, who are drawn to the waterfall's unique features and natural beauty. The ability to walk behind the waterfall also creates many unique photo opportunities. There are several things that make Seljalandsfoss waterfall a special and unique attraction: Walking behind the Waterfall Seljalandsfoss is one of the few waterfalls in the world where visitors can actually walk behind the cascading water, which creates a truly immersive and unforgettable experience. Make sure you wear your waterproof pants for this adventure and bring a soft wipe for your phone or camera lens. You will need good hiking boots, crampons are a good option as well if its slippery. Accessibility The waterfall is located just off Iceland's Ring Road, which makes it a popular stop for tourists exploring the southern part of the country. Its easy accessibility also means that visitors can enjoy the waterfall in a short amount of time without having to undertake a long or strenuous hike. Natural Beauty The waterfall itself is a stunning natural feature, with a 197-foot drop and a beautiful pool at its base. The surrounding area is also picturesque, with green fields, rugged cliffs, and views of the nearby Eyjafjallajökull volcano glacier. It is a prime spot for wedding photos too. Year-Round Accessibility Seljalandsfoss is open year-round, which means visitors can enjoy it in all seasons, from the lush greenery of summer to the snow-covered wonderland of winter. The winter months can be especially spectacular as the waterfall and surrounding area may be covered in snow and ice. That does, however, pose a problem with walking around it as it will be quite icy and may be closed for safety reasons. The climb back out will be difficult if not impossible so you would have to turn around and come back the way you came. It's Free! There is No Entrance Fee There is no entrance fee to visit Seljalandsfoss waterfall, as it is located in a public area and is freely accessible to all visitors. However, visitors may need to pay for parking if they choose to park in one of the designated parking areas nearby. Seljalandsfoss is a must-see attraction for visitors to Iceland who are interested in experiencing the country's natural beauty and unique geological features. The view from all angles is stunning and you will be awe-struck at its beauty. • Why Use a Travel Advisor to Book Iceland

Location: Iceland Great for: Singles, Couples, Groups, Families, and Honeymoons A travel advisor will help you plan your trip to Iceland, especially if you're looking for a hassle-free trip or a customized travel experience. Here is my reasoning in one sentence: Travelers don't know, what they don't know. The average person spends 40 hours searching online. Some get it done, others give up. Some have a great time on the trip but never knew what hidden gems they missed. Others have some issues along the way. Here is a little secret: Anyone can book travel. But what kind of experience you have both before the trip and while on the trip is important. My clients come to me because they just don't have time or desire to deal with it, they are overwhelmed by the options, and they value my expertise. There is so much information online, good bad, and ugly. It's hard to know what to choose so it takes time to sort through all the information out there. Then there is AI (artificial intelligence) which sorts through the aforementioned good, bad, and ugly and puts it all together into a neat little package not knowing if it is good, bad, or ugly. The ideal is an experienced travel advisor that has been to Iceland and experienced it. Next, an advisor that has not been there but studied the destination, knows travel, and knows what to look for, what to do, and can also provide a quality experience. Fortunately for me, I'm the former, and let me tell you Iceland is amazing! Benefits of using a travel advisor for your Iceland trip may include: Personalized Service Travel advisors can find the best tour or cruise for your taste or build and tailor your trip to your personal preferences and needs, Whether you're looking for luxury accommodations at the Blue Lagoon or a hotel in town, adventure activities, or a budget-friendly itinerary with lots of free time, the travel advisor is there to meet your needs. Your travel advisor will also let you know that a budget-friendly stay a the Blue Lagoon is not possible. They will advise you on what is reasonable to meet your budget. Expertise A good travel advisor will study destinations like Iceland, get certifications when available, and learn as much as they can about the destination. Specialists have in-depth knowledge about Iceland and can provide you with insider tips and recommendations that you might not find online. Specialists will also build relationships with suppliers in the destination, visit the locations when possible, and use the suppliers for first-hand knowledge. Iceland is an amazing place with so much to offer and a variety of ways to see it. Cruise Ship, Coach Tour, Custom Hotel Stays, and Hybrid trips are all options. An advisor will help you understand what will work best for what you are wanting to do. Hotels abound both standard Icelandic Hotels (think IKEA), Luxury, and unique. What you want to do will determine where you stay and for how long. When you go also depends on what you want to do since the weather is a major consideration. If you want Puffins, for example, you are not going in the winter but it's a great time for northern lights. If you get seasick, maybe whale watching is not on the agenda. To make this trip memorable, you'll need to commit to an initial consultation with your travel advisor to learn about your travel style and what you want to do. Time Savings Planning a trip to Iceland can be time-consuming as mentioned above, but a travel advisor will take care of all the research and details for you, including reminders and payments. For my clients, I even send weekly Iceland information to help them prepare for the trip. I also write blogs and create videos on the must-see sights, places to eat and drink, and words of wisdom when visiting Iceland. Coordinating a Group of Friends Group travel is extremely time-consuming and very stressful to do on your own. Travel advisors are used to working with groups and group contracts. Yep, there is a contract with suppliers if you form a group. Your travel advisor will fill you in on the contractual obligations and due dates. Believe me, groups can offer savings and extra perks, but they can also be tedious. I'm sure you don't want to be the one hounding your friend to make payments on time so they don't lose the reservation, tell you what room requests they have, advise you on allergies, view, smoking, and so on. Iceland is a great place for groups and they can be done in a few ways but let the travel advisor do it so you don't have to. Support Before the trip I offer a pre-trip call for any final questions. Although rare, if something goes wrong during, the trip, such as a flight cancellation or a change in your itinerary, travel advisors can help you navigate the situation and find a solution if one is not presented to you in the country. My phone is always open for clients that are traveling. So, I hope this helps you understand a bit more about what we do and how we can remove the hassles and help you plan your next stress-free trip to Iceland. • Making the Most of Your Travel Budget

Travel is back but airfare is still very high to Europe but who wants to wait after the last few years we have had? My clients want to travel and I want to help them travel. Whether you are traveling in luxury or saving up for that dream trip, getting the most out of your budget is important. Here are a few money-saving travel tips to make every dollar count. Travel During Off-peak Season If you have some flexibility, travel during off-peak or shoulder season. Shoulder season, right before or right after the busy season, offers similar weather but with fewer crowds. Off-season may require a slightly different wardrobe but will offer many of the same experiences with fewer crowds. If you can avoid traveling in the summer, in most cases, you will be able to walk the streets with less people, avoid long lines at museums and attractions, get the reservation you want, and pay less for almost everything. Book early Many tour operators, cruise lines, and hotels offer early booking savings. Even custom trips have the potential for early savings since all operators want to get a head start into the booking season. In addition, you have a better choice of hotels, rooms, or staterooms on the ship. Explore the Town on Your Own Each day does not have to be packed with tours. Take some time to breathe. Bring comfortable shoes and explore the cities on foot. If you are more comfortable with a tour try a walking tour. Try the hop-on and hop-off buses to help you get the feel of the city then explore on your own when you feel comfortable. It's also a great way to combat jet lag by making this your day-one activity. Remember to stay awake the first day so that you will adapt to the new time zone. Dining Get away from the touristy areas and try the food. Ask your travel advisor, hotel clerk, or concierge for suggestions. It will likely be a more authentic meal and cost much less. Plus you feel the ambiance and culture of the city. Bread Service Some European countries like Italy and Greece to name only two, will automatically provide bread and you will pay for it most of the time. You'll see it on the bill and is easily mistaken for the tip but it is not. Unless you love bread as I do, and will enjoy every bite, you can decline and save a bit. Even if it is already on the table. If you are in Italy for a week that amount adds up. Bundling Your Custom Trip If you are working with a travel advisor, many will "bundle" the package for you. They will include air, trains, transfers, tours, and hotels together to get a good bundled rate from the vendors. This is different from simply purchasing each component of the trip. You may find that Superstar Hotel is cheaper online but if you buy it and then add transfers, trains, or other components it ends up at a higher rate once you calculate the total expense. You may also get perks you don't get with less expensive "deals". The package enables travel advisors to get reductions on various services by buying them altogether. So that "great price" on a hotel may just cost you in the end. Taking Escorted Tours The average person spends over 40 hours researching trips and there is no guarantee that you will hit the most important places or find the hidden gems. Tour operators know so much about the places they take you and they love to share that knowledge. I can't, personally, imagine, missing the story about why Lephrecauns need the pot of gold and how tiny fairies are the cause as told by the tour driver on my last trip to Ireland. Find out more about the common misconceptions of coach tours here. The same applies here to "deals". Don't be fool by the "air included" price. Make sure that price is from YOUR hometown and not Newark or JFK. That "deal" just added an additional cost to your trip to get from your hometown to the gateway that is included. Flights If you don't need business class, try premium economy. I know that is a tough one. Travel in business class once and it's hard to go back. The airlines are coming up with new classes so who knows what is next. Premium, Plus, Solaris, and so on. You can also consider using frequent flyer points to upgrade but make sure the class you buy is eligible for the upgrade. Bundles and bulk airfare may not be eligible. If you don't need direct flights, you most definitely can save by taking an extra stop. If you can bare two stops, I cringe as I say this, but you can save. But, you know there is a but, more flights leave more room for delays. Very early or very late flights, depending on the flight can save also. And check the day of the week. Weekends, in most cases cost more so travel during mid-week if possible. Pro tip: calculate the cost of basic economy + bag fees then compare it to an economy ticket in the main cabin with a bag included. You may find that the economy option with bag, seat selection, accumulation of frequent flyer points, and boarding faster, is worth the small difference. Packing Pack only what you need and leave space for souvenirs. Don't get caught having to pay extra for luggage. Or having to repack between your checked bag and your carry-on in the airport to meet the requirement. That is a story for another blog but needless to say TSA was not happy with me. Many airlines charge for checked bags, and some even charge for a carry-on. The last thing you want is to pay even more because your bag is too heavy. If you can travel with just a carry-on, go for it. If not, get a luggage scale and check the weight. Also, consider trains. If you are traveling by train, you will be carrying your own bags on and off the train. So This One Will Throw You Come in a day early. I know it costs more. This is more peace of mind than savings but don't miss the start of the tour and have to get to the next port or the next stop on a tour because you planned down to the wire. Now some river cruises and tours do not leave port until day 2 so always be aware of the schedule to determine if you can come in the same day. If you take trip protection, and I always recommend that because it may cover delays but in the long run, the extra day is worth it to avoid the frustration and stress of having to deal with claims and missing the start of the tour. So those are my tips on cost savings when traveling while still maintaining a certain level of service. There are ways to go even further if you are willing to sacrifice service and quality but I am not willing to do that for myself and my clients don't want that either. If you have tips, I'd love to hear them. • 5 Common Misconceptions of Coach Tours

Great for: Singles, Couples, Groups, Honeymoons. Before you say never, take a look at this quick read. So many travelers have misconceptions about coach tours. And while not all tours can be equally compared, they are not exactly what many think. Everyone from honeymoon couples, singles, families, and groups go on tours and love them. Let's start with the common misconceptions I hear in my business then I'll discuss why you just might want to try one. Myth #1: Coach Tours are Boring Reality: A coach tour can be a great way to see a lot of sights in a short amount of time. You can visit multiple destinations, learn about the history and culture of each place, and have plenty of opportunities to take photos and explore on your own. Yes, on your own. A good tour company will also have knowledgeable and engaging guides who can make the experience fun and educational. Myth #2: Coach Tours are Only for Older Travelers. Reality: While it's true that coach tours can attract an older demographic, there are many tours that cater to all ages. The age of travelers on those types of trip continues to drop as the benefits grow. There are adventure tours, food, and wine tours, music and art tours, and many other types of tours that can appeal to a wide range of travelers. It's also worth noting that traveling with a group can be a great way to meet new people, regardless of age. Myth #3: Coach Tours are Too Structured. I Don't Want to be Herded Like Cattle. Reality: While it's true that coach tours have a set itinerary, this can actually be a positive thing. A well-planned itinerary ensures that you get to see all of the highlights of a destination, and it can also save you time and stress. Let someone else do the driving and you focus on the sights. That being said, most tour companies also build in free time for you to explore on your own or to do optional activities. The key here is to know what type of tour to book that does not rush you everywhere but allows a more laid-back vibe. Unless your goal is to see as much as possible. Tours that offer immersive experiences, multi-night hotel stays in the same town, and small group tours tend to have more free time for you to explore on your own. Let your travel advisor know you don't want to be rushed and they will provide the best tour with that in mind. Myth #4: Coach tours are too expensive Reality: While some high-end coach tours can be expensive, there are many affordable options available as well. Rule to live by: you get what you pay for. It's important to do your research and compare prices and itineraries from different tour companies. Or save yourself the trouble and hire a travel advisor to do it for you. Consider that an apples-to-apples comparison is critical. Find out what is included. Sure hotels and transportation are included. Do the hotels compare equally? How many meals are included? Does the tour group include entry to the sights you will see? How many people will there be on the bus? Many tours include accommodations, transportation, entry fees, and some meals, and you save money by bundling these costs together. Myth #5: I'm stuck on a bus with 50+ people, I need space. Reality: This can be true but many tour groups offer options some as low as 16 people, others a bit more. Group size varies depending on the tour and the tour company. Small groups have grown in popularity recently and more small groups are available. Larger groups can save you some hard-earned money. If you travel with a group of friends you might be able to get your own coach or van so you travel with your group but visit the sights with everyone. They will be there anyway if you go it alone so this may be a great option for you. But you'll need enough people in your group to make it worth it. Reasons to Consider a Tour Reason #1 Convenience Taking a coach tour means you don't have to worry about planning your own itinerary or navigating unfamiliar roads. Eliminate the countless hours of research to find the must-see places and the hidden gems. The tour company will take care of all the logistics, including transportation, accommodation, and activities. You kick back and enjoy the trip. If an issue arises, someone is right there to resolve it. You don't need to figure out who to ask, you met that person on day 1! Reason #2: Expertise Tour guides are typically knowledgeable about the history, culture, and natural wonders of the area and they know the local hangouts too! They can provide valuable insights and information that you might not get if you were traveling on your own. In addition, they are a great resource for where to go after dinner or when you have "independent" time. Example: In Killarney, you can take a horse-drawn carriages, called Jaunting cars, through the national park. Our tour guide told us who to avoid if we took it on our own. As it turns out so many people wanted to do this, that our guide negotiated a price with several drivers, we got a great ride and a reduced price! This was my carriage. We also got advice on where to eat and have a pint while there. We had a free evening and had far too much fun! Reason #3 Safety Some countries can be challenging to navigate at certain times of the year, particularly for those who are not familiar with the terrain. The United Kingdom and Australia to name a few, drive on the left. Iceland and Switzerland have the weather to contend with. A coach tour can provide an added level of safety, as the tour company will have experience driving on the area roads and will know how to handle unexpected weather conditions, route closures, natural wonders, or unforeseen events. Example: in Iceland Reynsfjara, the famous black sand beach, is a very dangerous beach. But it is also a very popular tourist attraction. The water can carry you out to sea with little warning. You must know that and know where to stand so you minimize any threat of being swept away. Your guides will show you. There are no signs to say "stand here". Reason #4 Group Camaraderie Traveling with a group of people can be a great way to meet new people and make new friends. It can also be more enjoyable to share experiences with others, such as watching the Northern Lights, exploring a new hiking trail, visiting a local pub, or dining at a local eatery. Cocktails at a lagoon spa are fun with new friends too! Reason #5 Cost savings While it may seem like a coach tour is more expensive than traveling on your own, it can actually be more cost-effective in the long run. Tour companies often negotiate discounts on activities and accommodations, and many times breakfast is included. You won't have to pay for gas, car rental fees, rental car insurance, international driver's license, or alternate drop-off charges. They may also be able to offer great rates on flights. If meals are included, that is one less thing to worry about! My preferred vendors usually add in a welcome cocktail reception and/or farewell dinners or banquets. Reason #6 Add on Days Do you still feel you need time to explore? I always recommend a few extra days before or after to do this. Coming in early is a great way to recuperate from jet lag and still enjoy a few sights. Or you can get all the must-see sights out of the way with the tour then you can stay a few days to try other things if you have not done everything you would like. You now have a grasp of the culture and customs so it is much easier. Coach Tours come in many ways from fast to slow, large to small, budget to high end. All of these types of tours try to meet the needs of the travelers and your travel adviser will ask what you are looking for in a tour to determine which tour meets your needs. Taking a coach tour can be a great way to see a new country, explore the cultures, and make the most of your time there and your advisor can help you decide if it is right for you. By dispelling these common misconceptions, you may be more likely to consider a coach tour as a viable travel option. Check out a few tours on our Itinerary Inspiration Pages for Ireland and Iceland. They range from established coach tours, private driver tours, and hybrid. • Budapest Hungary, A Great Place to Visit

What’s so great about Budapest? Everything! From castles to museums to thermal baths, Budapest is a great place to visit. With nearly two million inhabitants, Budapest is the capital of and most populated city in Hungary. From its beginnings as an early Celtic settlement, Budapest became part of the Hungarian empire in the 9th century. Though it has been turned over in power to a few other nations over time, it eventually returned to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which then ended after World War I. Located along the Danube River, Budapest was voted Best European Destination of 2019 by a European Commission tourism partner. The Danube divides the city’s Buda and Pest sides and is the #2 most recommended sight to see. The second longest river in Europe, the Danube is accessible by boat or by foot. Seeing it on foot is absolutely free, and the Danube Promenade is an excellent vantage point. The #1 most recommended Budapest attraction is the Fisherman’s Bastion, which is also free. Built in 1905, Fisherman’s Bastion is named after a medieval group of fishermen who protected the city from invasion. Though the panoramic sights from this location are amazing, be sure to check out the turrets on-site, too. While at Castle Hill, don’t forget to explore the 13th century Buda Castle, Matthias Church, or the underground labyrinth to Fisherman’s Bastion. The Széchenyi Chain Bridge, a 1,250-foot-long suspension bridge, was built in the 1800s and was mostly destroyed during WWII. It was reconstructed soon after and, today, visitors walk, bike and drive across it. It’s fantastic for photos, especially at night and, from it, you can see the Hungarian Parliament building, one of Budapest’s most famous landmarks. While government business is still conducted here, visitors go to see the Gothic-Revival-style architecture. It also houses the crown jewels of Hungary and is said to be a symbol of democracy and independence. A soak in a thermal bath is a uniquely Budapest experience, and the city is often called “The City of Spas.” There are more than 100 of these baths throughout the city, and many of them claim to promote relaxation and even healing. After dark, some of them transform into hip dance clubs, so if you’re planning a family bath, be sure to go during the day. If communal bathing is not your thing, consider either the Hungarian State Opera House or the House of Terror Museum. The opera house has been in operation since 1884, and the exterior alone justifies a look, even if you never step foot inside. The House of Terror Museum details Hungary’s horrifying struggles under the fascist and Stalinist regimes. This powerful exhibit has English audio guides available or, with ten-day notice, you can reserve a personal English-speaking tour guide. Budapest has been transformed from a city that has struggled over the centuries into one that is flourishing in modern times, but there is no shortage of artifacts from the past to see there. History and architecture buffs are sure to be overwhelmed with all there is to see and do, and nature lovers will adore their time on the Danube but, whether indoors or out, Budapest is a city that is definitely worth a visit. • Now I'm Hungary

Tasty Treats in Budapest, Hungary Location: Budapest, Hungary Great for: Singles, Couples, Families, Groups, and Honeymoons When I go to a new destination, I like to see the must-see sights, to be honest, so I can say I did. But my favorite places tend to be the ones most don’t see, the small bistros, city parks, where I can meet new people, learn about the culture, and hear their stories. Part of the culture of a destination is the food and I always try to taste some of the favorites. I have tasted a few that I will not try again. If you see me, ask about yemas of Avila Spain. But mostly it is a great way to experience the culture of a new land. Budapest is full of wonders. Regardless of your reason to visit, whether it is to take in the architecture, soak in the history, or enjoy the natural sites, do not leave without indulging in the authentic dishes served throughout the nation. Your palette will be dancing with the rich flavors. To guide you to some of the best traditional food and spots to get it, I have created a list of tasty treats for your next trip Budapest. You cannot leave Budapest without trying one its most traditional foods, and most popular food, langos. It is a flatbread that is deep-fried in fat and can be served plain or smothered with cheese blends and other flavorful toppings. They are available nearly everywhere, but we recommend heading to the Central Market Hall. Sausages are a staple in Hungary you will find them in all types of food. The best place to get sausage is the Central Market Hall. In this 3-story building filled with stalls you can find all types of sausage. You must try the csabai kolbasz, it is a bit spicy so keep that in mind. Hungarians do love paprika. Gyumolcsleves is a cold fruit soup served prior to your meal. The most popular is the cherry version. Of course, you simply must have Hungary’s national dish, Gulyas or what we would call Goulash. There is this cute little hidden gem in the city’s Castle District called Baltazar Budapest. Stop in there for your goulash. For dessert, try a shareable treat called Kurtoskalacs (Chimney Cake). It is a sweet crunchy dough that is served hot. You can sprinkle cinnamon, and walnuts on it This is a Christmas Market favorite. Hungarian Unicum, a famous liquor in the country is an herbal bitter that aids indigestion, which you will find helps tremendously after delving into all the spicy street foods. Head to the Zwack Museum to learn all about the miracle liquor. Anyone who loves the age-old delicacy marzipan, I recommend a visit to Szamos Marzipan, a museum in honor of the artists Mátyás Szamos and Károly Szabó, the artists that started shaping marzipan into the shapes of flowers and other beautiful creations in the 1930s. If you just adore delis, you must go to Mangalica & Társai Húspatika. This deli has everything from assorted salamis, cured hams, and more. This deli stands today in dedication to the curly-haired Mangalica pig, which is a domesticated, extremely furry Hungarian swine. Register here to see the recording of the Gems of Southeastern Europe River Cruise Presentation from 2020. Ask about current specials and onboard credits if you book with Vibrant Travel. • Is a River Cruise for Me?

Location: Available Worldwide Great for: Singles, Couples, Families, Groups, and Honeymoons Anyone considering a visit to multiple countries in Europe should at least consider a river cruise. If you have never been on a river cruise, you may think it is very much like an ocean cruise but smaller. In some ways yes, but in most ways, no. Tours have been a popular way to vacation for decades and for good reason. They’re affordable, convenient, and offer travelers peace of mind knowing that everything they need for a fantastic trip is taken care of. Plus they don't need to drive, you will get to see the best sights, and get expert commentary from locals. River cruises are closer to tours than to ocean cruises but they offer a different experience. Here are 12 reasons to consider river cruising on your next vacation. 1. Convenience Taking a river cruise means that you don't have to worry about the logistics of planning your own itinerary or navigating unfamiliar roads or transportation systems. The cruise company and your travel advisor will take care of all the details, including transportation, accommodation, and activities. No researching, creating itineraries, or wondering about what to see. 2. Your River Cruise Ship is Your Hotel No more lugging around your suitcase to daily hotels. You actually get to unpack only once. On a river cruise, many times you walk off, right into your destination so no need to drive. Think of that cute Bavarian town, right there, only footsteps away! One of the reasons I love river cruises so much is the feeling of walking into a twin-balcony stateroom that will be your home away from home for the next 7- 10 days or more. You arrive, you unpack, you stay. Period. Whether you choose to have a window view, a private balcony, or even a twin balcony, you’ll always have a room with a view. 3. A More Intimate Experience River cruising offers a more intimate setting. And don’t think of intimate as small, there are plenty of spaces to get some privacy when you want it. Most ships are under 200 passengers so you’ll never have to wait in line. You’ll have more time to enjoy all the amenities and have a more personal experience with other passengers and crew. From ordering a beverage to getting on and off the ship, you’ll enjoy the absence of long lines. You'll have more time in each destination without having to bus-up to get to the next stop. Less passengers also means smaller groups on excursions too! 4. Authentic and Immersive Cultural Experiences Get away from the touristy spots and explore hidden gems or explore on your own since most of the time your ship is docked right in town! River cruises often include excursions to local attractions and cultural experiences, such as wine tastings, museum visits, and city tours. You'll be able to immerse yourself in the local culture and get a more authentic experience of each destination. And they are included! Yes, excursions are included in the cost of the river cruise. Depending on the line, you can experience up to 2 per day! 5. Slow Down and Enjoy Many tours race you from one sight to another but river cruise port departures are later in the afternoon so you'll have more time in one place. Whether you choose an evening walking through cobblestone streets, a local show or performance, or one last glass of wine after dinner while listening to a local musician, immersing yourself in the evening culture together with the locals is a unique experience and one that you can't pass up. Your travel advisor and the cruise managers onboard are available to assist with recommendations too. 6 . Oh the Views! A river cruise offers a unique perspective on the landscapes, cities, and towns along the river. You'll be able to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding scenery without having to worry about driving or navigating and missing the beauty around you. And did I mention castles? That’s right, castle views. From Amsterdam to Basel along the Rhine River, and in Budapest, Bratislava, Dürnstein and Passau on the Danube, you’ll see colorful architecture and castles that will have you speechless. But don’t just drive by them, why not walk, hike, or drive to them and then explore their amazing history and wonderful stories with a knowledgeable guide? 7. River Cruise Trips for All Types Try a wine cruise through Bordeaux, with a foodie tour in Lyon. Did I mention the wine is included with lunch and dinner as well as the wine tastings on many lines? Visit castles and vineyards on a Rhine River cruise. If you love beautiful views and port wine, then Portugal’s Douro River is where you should be. Golf anyone? The concierge golf service down the Danube is a must. For anyone that just loves to get away around the holidays, try a Christmas Market cruise. Oh-so-many choices. 8. Family Friendly With a variety of activities and plenty of stops along the way, everyone in the family will have an unforgettable experience. River cruising is perfect for multi-generational families. From grandparents to teenage grandchildren, the entire family will bond over a range of topics and activities from food to history to countryside excursions. There really is something to do for everyone on board at each destination. Some members of your group may choose to take advantage of spa services, the sundeck pool, or cultural activities, while others may prefer to seek out a quiet space with a book. Mealtimes are the perfect opportunity for everyone to come back together again as a family. It really is the perfect multi-generational vacation for your family or group of friends. 9. Comfort, Amenities, and the Food! River cruises often offer luxurious amenities such as onboard spas, gourmet restaurants, and comfortable staterooms. You'll be able to relax and enjoy the journey in comfort, without having to worry about the stresses of travel. Food is included while onboard a river cruise so make sure to take advantage of the wonderful meals. Whether you’re into wine tasting or local street food, a river cruise provides an exceptional culinary experience both on the ship and at every destination. The onboard culinary team focuses on utilizing fresh local ingredients and meals are paired with local wines. There are absolutely no mass-produced and basic buffet food on the river. Special accommodations can be made for gluten-free or other dietary needs, just ask. Specific to AmaWaterways, is an amazing Chaine D' Rotisseur tasting menu that can't be missed. Ask you travel advisor to book a trip with Amawaterways to experience this. 10. A Variety of Experiences Let’s not forget just how special every European country is! The towns and cities may be close in proximity along the river, but don’t be surprised by the unique feeling and experiences that each destination gives you. Choose from visiting local breweries, hiking to castles, biking through trendy neighborhoods, or visiting museums that highlight the local culture. And with so many rivers to sail, you will never get bored. Not interested in a tour, thanks ok, the bus is not leaving you, stay on the ship and enjoy or sit in town and have a coffee. You don't have to go where everyone goes. 11. Time Savings A river cruise is an efficient way to see multiple destinations in a short period of time. Bucketlisters can cross of quite a few countries off the list and even a few extra with pre or post-stays. You won't have to worry about spending hours on transportation or driving between destinations. Check the box and done! 12. No Motion Sickness For my cruisers out there, and I am one, motion sickness can really bring down a trip if you are not prepared. But on a river cruise, no prep is needed! Because you glide across the water like glass on the rivers, there is no motion sickness like you would experience on an ocean cruise. Leave the Dramamine at home and enjoy the trip. So, there you have it. Twelve reasons why you should consider river cruising. From convenience to all the inclusions, a river cruise just might be the right choice for your next trip to Europe and beyond. Did you know you can even take on in South Africa? China? France? There are so many to choose from, ask your travel advisor what might work for you.
