  • My Second Favorite Way to See Paris, France

Paris is a walkable city but I have a second favorite way to see the city and that is the Batobus. The French word for boat is bateau.  (Bat-oh)  This bateau is a river shuttle on the Seine and thus became the Batobus.   I love this mode of transportation for many reasons.  It offers a great perspective of Paris, from the Seine,  it is a hop-on hop-off experience  and stops at all the standard places. Plus, it is a great way to pass the time on your first day in Paris without rushing to a tour or crashing at your hotel room.  There are many reasons not to do that but that is another article. Passes can be purchased at each stop and are valid for 24 hours and up. Cost is $17 euros $19 for 48 hours and 60 for an annual pass.  Children under 4 are free.  The Batobus opens at 10:00 am and closes from 5:00-9:30 depending on season.  The later closing, although in summer, is a great way to see the city at night.  Watch the route and closing time or you may have to cab take a back to your hotel. With an  open-top in the summer and heat in the winter you will be comfortable year-round.  Avoid summer season to avoid crowds and lines.  Here are several tips on the stops.   Louvre: Visit the Louvre, Palais Royal and Jardin des Tuileries.   Do not forget Rue de Rivoli and get your fashionista fix. Place de la Concord:  Champs Elysees, it is a bit of a walk but a beautiful one. Arc d’Triomphe is here as well.   Eiffel Tour:  The most beautiful view of the Tower.  If just for this, take the Batobus.  Les Invalides:  Visit Pont Alexandre III, Rodin Museum, National Assembly building. Musee D’Orsay:  Land in the chic 7th arrondissement.  Visit Musee D’Orsay, walk the Rive Gauche, or shop the upscale boutiques. Saint-Germain-des-Pres: See Luxembourg Gardens and soak in the ambiance that artists and intellectuals like Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir loved.  And grab a macaroon at Laduree while there. Notre Dame: Ile de la Cite is in the heart of Paris and a must see.  Besides Notre Dame Cathedral, the famous Pont Neuf, and Latin Quarter are here.  If you love old books, do not miss Shakespeare and Company. Jardin des Plantes: will get you to the design center and Pantheon. Hotel de Ville  is where you will find Pompidou center which is said to hold the finest collection of European modern art. One caveat to my second favorite, if you have somewhere you must be at a certain time, this is not the best way to get there.  It runs in one direction and can take a while to get places if your stop is behind you. Try Batobus next time you are in Paris and let me know your thoughts. View of Notre Dame from the Batobus Check out my blog and video coming down from the top of the Eiffel Tower. Just click the photo above to get there.  If you enjoyed the article please like it and share it with your friends. • Beyond Forks: The Global Appeal of Chopsticks and Their Differences

Location: Asia Great for: Singles, Couples, Families, Groups, and Honeymoons Chopstick Appeal I can't speak for everyone but as the saying goes "When in Rome do as the Romans do". When I eat Asian food, I like to use chopsticks so I started thinking about this handy utensil and how it might differ from one country to the next. It's just the way I think :-) Here are some interesting facts about chopsticks! The history of chopsticks as dining utensils is quite long and fascinating, dating back thousands of years. The exact origin of chopsticks is not clear but they are believed to have been developed independently in several regions of Asia. Here's a general overview of the history of chopsticks: Early Origins The earliest evidence of chopsticks being used as eating utensils can be traced back to ancient China, around 1200 to 1000 BCE. Initially, chopsticks were likely used for cooking rather than eating. Over time, the design and materials used for chopsticks evolved to accommodate various culinary practices and preferences. For example, cooking chopsticks have longer and thicker handles to manipulate hot pots and stir-fry dishes. Modern chopsticks can be made from a variety of materials, including bamboo, wood, plastic, metal, and even ivory or bone, depending on the region and personal preferences. In many Asian cultures, chopsticks hold significant cultural and symbolic value. They are considered more than just tools for eating; they are a symbol of tradition, respect, and unity within families and communities. The Idea Spreads Chopsticks gradually spread to neighboring countries, such as Japan, Korea, and Vietnam where each region developed its own style and variation of chopsticks over time. Chopsticks have a rich and diverse history, and their use as dining utensils continues to be an integral part of Asian culinary traditions. They are not only practical tools for eating but also carry cultural significance and are a source of pride for many people in Asia and around the world. You How Are Chopsticks Different? Chopsticks vary by the country that uses them in terms of their design, length, material, and cultural significance. Here is a breakdown of some of the key differences in chopsticks among countries that use them: Square End Chopsticks China Chinese chopsticks are typically longer (around 9 to 10 inches) compared to those of other countries. They are often made from materials like bamboo, wood, or plastic, with various designs and patterns. Chinese chopsticks may have a square or blunt end, which makes them more suitable for gripping and picking up various types of food, including large pieces of meat and vegetables. Etiquette in China involves some specific rules, such as not pointing your chopsticks at others, not sticking them upright in a bowl of rice (as it resembles incense at a funeral), and not using them to spear food. Lacquer Chopsticks Japan Japanese chopsticks, known as "hashi," are generally shorter (around 8 inches) than Chinese chopsticks. They are often made from wood, bamboo, or lacquered materials. Japanese chopsticks have a more pointed and tapered design, making them suitable for delicate and precise handling of food, particularly sushi and sashimi. Japanese chopstick etiquette is highly developed, with customs like not passing food directly from one pair of chopsticks to another, not sticking chopsticks into rice, and not using chopsticks to point or gesture. Stainless Steel Chopsticks Korea Korean chopsticks are unique in that they are typically made of metal (stainless steel), rather than wood or bamboo. They have a flat, rectangular shape, which can make them a bit slippery, requiring a different technique for holding and using them. Korean chopsticks are shorter and thicker compared to Chinese and Japanese chopsticks. Korean chopstick etiquette includes avoiding making a loud noise while using them and not pointing them at others. Note: chopsticks are usually accompanied by a stainless steel spoon for layering rice. Vietnamese Chopsticks Vietnam Vietnamese chopsticks, known as "đũa," are usually made from wood or bamboo. They have a longer and wider design, which makes them suitable for picking up various ingredients in Vietnamese cuisine, such as herbs, noodles, and vegetables. Vietnamese chopstick etiquette is more relaxed compared to some other Asian countries, but it still emphasizes respect for elders and not pointing chopsticks at people. Each of these countries has its unique chopstick traditions, influenced by cultural practices, culinary preferences, and materials available in the region. While chopsticks serve the common purpose of eating, the specific variations in design and etiquette reflect the cultural richness and diversity of each country. • Experience a Venetian Christmas: Markets, Lights, and Seasonal Delights

Travel Destination: Venice, Italy Great for: Singles, Couples, Groups, Families, and Honeymoons Venice, the romantic city of canals, transforms into a magical winter wonderland during the holiday season. While Venice may be known for its gondolas and historic architecture, Christmas markets, like most of Europe, are also a special part of the city's festive charm. One of the best ways to see Venice, Italy is to wander through Venice's narrow streets and picturesque squares. It is a great place to just book a hotel and explore! When you travel to Venice you'll find a variety of markets offering delightful crafts, delicious treats, and beautiful gifts. Here are a few Christmas markets in Venice, complete with key dates and must-buy items. Always check the dates as they can change from year to year. Campo Santo Stefano Christmas Market Campo Santo Stefano, one of Venice’s most beautiful squares, hosts one of the city’s largest and most popular Christmas markets. The market stalls are filled with artisanal products, from hand-painted glass ornaments to traditional Venetian masks. You’ll also find cozy woolen scarves, leather goods, and intricate lacework. This market is ideal for anyone looking for high-quality, locally made gifts. Dates : December 1st – January 6th What to Buy : Murano glass Christmas decorations Handcrafted Venetian masks Locally made lace and textiles Venice Christmas Fair at Strada Nuova Located along the bustling Strada Nuova, this market is perfect for those looking to experience a blend of festive cheer and local life. The Christmas fair features stalls selling a variety of traditional Italian holiday foods, handmade toys, and unique jewelry. As you shop, you can enjoy seasonal treats like hot mulled wine (vin brulé) and panettone. Dates : December 2nd – December 24th What to Buy : Traditional Italian panettone and pandoro cakes Handmade jewelry and accessories Toys crafted from wood and fabric Ca' Sagredo Christmas Market Ca' Sagredo, a stunning 15th-century palace-turned-hotel, opens its doors to a luxurious and intimate Christmas market. This market is smaller in scale but offers high-end, artisanal items that make perfect gifts for loved ones. It's a great place to pick up unique, high-quality crafts while admiring the lavish surroundings of this historic palace. Dates : Mid-December (exact dates vary) What to Buy : Fine Venetian glassware and ceramics Luxury candles and fragrances Elegant handmade leather accessories Rialto Market Christmas Edition Normally a bustling fresh produce market, the Rialto Market transforms into a special Christmas market during the festive season. Dates : December 8th – December 24th What to Buy : Handcrafted ceramics and pottery Unique artisan jewelry Venetian fritole (fried doughnuts) and festive street food Tips for Visiting Venice's Christmas Markets Bring cash : While many vendors accept card payments, having cash is always a good idea at smaller stalls. Plan ahead, trust me, you don't want to use an ATM is Venice, it will cost you! Dress warm : Venice can get chilly in December, so be sure to layer up for your market strolls. Plan your time : Some markets only run for a few days, so check dates in advance to ensure you don’t miss out. A trip to Venice's Christmas markets offers a delightful blend of traditional crafts, festive treats, and local charm. Whether you're searching for unique gifts or just want to soak in the holiday atmosphere, these markets will make your winter visit to Venice truly magical. I love Venice any time of year so I might be a bit biased 😁 📝 Special Note: Yes, St. Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco)  does occasionally host special events during the Christmas season, but it's not typically known for having a large or traditional Christmas market like other areas of Venice. Instead, the square is more often decorated with festive lights and hosts seasonal concerts or special events. Don't miss this while there. The festive spirit in and around St. Mark's Square is undeniable, with the historical landmarks beautifully illuminated, but for a full Christmas market experience, it's best to explore other Venetian squares. However, always check local event listings, as smaller pop-up markets or craft fairs could be scheduled closer to the season. So there you have it—Venice during the holidays is an enchanting experience filled with twinkling lights, festive treats, and one-of-a-kind treasures. Whether you're sipping vin brulé at Strada Nuova, hunting for Murano glass at Campo Santo Stefano, or indulging in fritole on Giudecca, the city offers a little something special for everyone. Bundle up, bring your holiday spirit (and a bit of extra luggage for all those gifts), and let Venice cast its winter spell on you. Oh, and don’t forget to take a moment to simply wander—because getting delightfully lost in Venice is truly the best gift of all. 🎄✨ Try some of these tours next time you are considering Venice See our open tours of Italy here At Vibrant Travel, we research, plan, and book vacations for busy travelers, couples, and groups looking for authentic experiences in Europe and beyond. • Travel to Tokyo: Navigation and Planning Tips

Location: Tokyo, Japan Great for: Singles, Couples, Families, Groups, and Honeymoons Let's talk Tokyo! This amazing metropolis has so much to offer travelers to Japan. Art, culture, food, history, thrills, anime, manga, cafe's and so much more. So this brief article is an introduction to the start of planning your trip. Let's discuss navigating the city and length of stay. The Ideal Amount of Time to Spend in Tokyo, Japan The ideal amount of time to stay in Tokyo depends on your personal preferences, interests, and how thoroughly you want to explore the city. To See Everything If you want to see everything in Tokyo, including many of its neighborhoods, museums, parks, and other attractions, a stay of at least 2 to 3 weeks would be ideal. This allows for a more leisurely exploration and the opportunity to dive deeper into various aspects of the city. Hitting Just the Highlights For a more condensed visit focused to see the major highlights and popular attractions, a stay of 5 to 7 days is often recommended. This duration allows you to explore key districts like Shibuya, Shinjuku, Asakusa, and Ginza, visit iconic landmarks such as the Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Skytree, experience traditional culture at places like Meiji Shrine and Senso-ji Temple, and enjoy the city's vibrant food scene. Keep in mind that Tokyo is a dynamic city with constantly changing events, exhibitions, and seasonal attractions. Plan your visit based on your interests, and be flexible to adapt your itinerary based on local events and recommendations. Additionally, Tokyo serves as a great hub for exploring other parts of Japan. If you have more time, consider allocating a portion of your trip to nearby cities and regions to get a more comprehensive experience of Japanese culture and landscapes. The Shinkansen train also called the bullet train, will wish you away to various parts of the island for a truly magical adventure in a short amount of time. Tips for Navigating When Traveling to Tokyo, Japan Use Public Transportation Tokyo’s subway and train systems are world-class and easier to navigate with apps like Google Maps and Tokyo Metro Subway App. Key lines include the JR Yamanote Line (which circles central Tokyo) and the Tokyo Metro lines. The metro stations can be daunting so make sure you know which exit to take. Understand Addressing Tokyo addresses are structured by block and building number, not street names. Use landmarks and navigation apps for guidance. Neighborhood Vibes Tokyo neighborhoods are highly specialized. Plan your itinerary by interest: Fashion: Harajuku, Ginza. History and Culture: Asakusa, Ueno. Nightlife: Shinjuku, Roppongi. Language Barriers English signage is common in transportation hubs, but having a translation app can be helpful for more localized areas and traveling outside the city. Cultural Differences Try to learn a few phrases such as hello, thank you, etc. This goes a long way in different cultures. Learn a bit of the culture and etiquette before leaving. Bowing when greeting someone, lowering your voice, lining up for the subway, or chopstick etiquette will put everyone at ease. Watch for our articles on this topic. Tokyo is a mosaic of neighborhoods, each offering its own flavor of culture, history, and modernity. Whether you’re marveling at ancient temples in Asakusa, shopping in the luxury stores of Ginza, or enjoying the vibrant nightlife in Roppongi, Tokyo is a wonderful place to explore.
