- Managing Cancun Airport
Location: Cancun, Mexico Great for: Singles, Couples, Families, Groups, Elopements, Destination Weddings, and Honeymoons So you made the decision, you're going to Mexico with gorgeous blue waters, sand between your toes, palm trees swaying in the wind, and an umbrella cocktail in your hand, but first, you have to get through the airport. If you've never been to the Cancun airport, let me assure you, you can maneuver it easily so here are a few tips. It is really much easier than the title sounds but there are a few things to watch for. When you deboard the plane you will head to passport control. Make sure you have your boarding pass to show the agent. Some of them are not the most patient people when you have to look for it after tucking it away. The next stop is the baggage claim and then through customs. If you have anything to declare choose that line if not, most don't go through the "Nothing to Declare" section and head toward your pick-up locations. Here is where it can be daunting. As you walk the hall or I like to call it "run the gauntlet", you have people from car rentals, taxi companies, and tour groups, all yelling at you to get your attention. If you already have pick-up arrangements, keep walking. Always have a plan or book a transfer in advance to save the hassle. You will thank me. Whew, through there. Next, you'll reach an area with sliding doors that looks like it might be for hotel guests of a timeshare. It is the last area before the exit so keep walking, Here you will see lines and lines of people waiting to help you, sell you something, or offer a timeshare. As mentioned earlier, you should have already made arrangements and just mention that and they will tell you which area to stand if that was not already clear on your documents. Whew, you did it, you ran the gauntlet and survived, metaphorically, of course, it is as safe as any other airport. As you exit the doors, and the heat from the sun hits your skin, you'll know you are almost there. Walk past the mini-mart into the area labeled A through D. People will approach you but it's more subdued there than in the hallway. It looks a bit chaotic but there is order to it all. If you've reached this point and don't know where to stand, you will see people with signs for your transportation. If you did not make arrangements, here you will find Taxis, private transport, and shared transport. Say goodbye to the airport and hello to Cancun! Pro tip: Try to arrive on an early flight so you can take advantage of the day and ask your resort to store your bags if your room is not ready. When you leave, look for a later flight because you don't want to be sitting in the airport waiting for the airline desks to open because you had to leave so far ahead from your resort. However, allow enough time to get to the airport with traffic and construction in the area. One caveat, a later flight means a busier airport so make your choice about what is important. If you have time in the airport there is plenty of shopping to keep you busy and dining too. - Dining at the Glyde Inn
Location: Annagassan, County Louth in Ireland Great for: Singles, Couples, Families, Groups, Elopements, and Honeymoons Come along with us to Ireland. See group trips to Ireland here. Between Belfast and Dublin lies the Antrum Coast, a beautiful coastline of castles, ruins, lush green landscape, and the Irish Sea. It is beautiful like all of Ireland and definitely a recommended drive. As part of a tour, we were taken to this small, unassuming Inn. Like many places in Ireland, it looks old and untouched but offers something special inside. I love little gems like this and I think you will too. The Pub It's a family-run traditional Irish pub with music on some nights. Awards include 'Pub of The Year', and 'Best Beer Garden of the year' and received The James Joyce award for the most authentic Irish pub. They have a well-stocked bar of craft beers including the locally brewed Linn Duachaill beer, Dan Kelly cider, and the renowned Listoke Gin. distilled in a 200-year-old barn. The pub was established in 1770 giving it the charm of an old Irish pub. The proprietors today are Paul and Ann O'Neill, who have built the business since 1976. The pub is so full of memorabilia you could just stare at it to see each unique piece of history. The Restaurant The restaurant is called, Linn Duachaill. and the decor is rustic and nautical with lots of wood, nautical paintings, and lobster traps. run by the same family for years. The owner, Paul, greeted us and showed us original pictures of the Inn. During our visit, I found the service and the food good. I would definitely go back. The restaurant which uses locally sourced food has won awards including National Geographic World's best places to eat, Irish Restaurant awards for Best casual dining, and Best National Pub of the year. We arrived at low tide and our view was the lobster pots, long stretches of sand before Dundalk Bay, and Mourne and Cooley mountains in the distance. It reminds me of Cape Cod in New England in the fall. For the best views, try to time it when the tide is in. Turquoise blue picnic tables line the back of the restaurant and seem a bit out of place but I can see why visitors would want to have a casual drink and dine with that view. The menu was set as part of the tour but they also offer a standard menu, seasonal and seafood specials. We started with Bulmers Cider which became a favorite on our trip. I started with mussels. I love seafood and especially love mussels so for me to say these were the best I've ever had is a high compliment. They were presented in a light sauce that was so good I really wanted to use the bread to dip and finish every last drop. Dessert was simple, bite-sizeand traditional. So if you are traveling through the area, which has stunning views of the coast and happens to be between Dublin and Belfast, stop in for a pint and a meal. - What to Know Before Your Trip to Kenya
Location: Kenya Great for: Singles, Couples, Groups, Elopements, and Honeymoons Traveling to Kenya Traveling to Kenya is a trip of a lifetime but can leave you full of questions. From drinking water to packing for a safari and what inoculations and visas you might need may cause you to pause. But it doesn't have to. This article covers what you need to know or to find out before you go to Kenya. As always, Vibrant Travel is here to help you get to Kenya. Clothing Considerations Safaris are all about neutral. The secret is to go unnoticed by the wildlife for as long as possible. By keeping clothing colors as neutral and as light as possible, you will blend in better with the surrounding environment. Think of khaki, beige, light brown, and green as the best color palette for a safari. Aside from standing out to the animals, much like bright flowers draw the bees, darker and brighter clothing will attract unwanted mosquitoes, tsetse flies, and insects. See the clothing post for more specifics on what to wear on a safari. Although you may be staying in luxury, meals are informal, so smart attire is not required Comfortable is the name of the game in the bush. And depending on the time of year you go, you will want light breathable clothing. Cotton is perfect but the lightweight wicking fabrics, if you like them, will work. That said, ditch the bright white t-shirt for something that blends in. Inoculations, Medication, Prevention Be sure to consult a travel doctor before travel and get advice as to the appropriate medications and inoculations for your safari. Tell the doctor which cities and camps you will be visiting as some regions within the country may be malaria-free. Travel Doctors are the only ones that can give you a yellow fever shot and they are knowledgeable about the requirements and medications you will need for your destination. They will also provide a letter or certificate if you are unable to obtain a yellow fever vaccination for medical reasons. It is important to take your medications as instructed for the full duration indicated. It is also recommended to have Yellow Fever shots (or an exemption certificate issued) at least 10 days prior to departure for Kenya. Although Kenya does not require a yellow fever certificate for entry, other countries that you may transit to on your journey might. Malaria pills are often recommended for Kenya as is a yellow fever vaccine but your doctor will determine what is best for you based on your medical history. Photos and Up Close with the Animals You will have an opportunity to look for the Big 5 while on the game drives. Remember to pack a telephoto lens for your camera, if you have one, and a video camera, along with all the necessary plugs, chargers, and memory cards needed. A smartphone works well too but is much harder to capture the animals you might see if they are at a distance. A pair of binoculars may be useful as well. Smart Phones Depending on how remote you decide to go, you may or may not have service. Smartphones work in most areas of Kenya and also at the lodges within the reserve, although it is advised to keep them on silent mode on game-drive vehicles as they are considered an unnecessary disturbance to wildlife and other guests. When not on the game drives, you may want to consider a sim card. They are available at most international airports for use in your phone. Check with your provider as your phone must be "unlocked" to use a sim. Many of the lodges have wifi and each lodge usually has a dedicated computer for guest use. Voltage Converter Electricity is a 220-volt alternating current system. Wall plug units take a round two-prong European plug. It is advisable to bring the necessary converter or adapter from your home country, should you need to charge cameras or laptops. Alternatively, international adaptors are available for purchase at the lodges. Passports and Visas Travelers arriving in Kenya are required to have passports that will be valid for at least six months from the date of arrival and contain at least three pages for affixing visas and arrival stamps. Generally, travelers arriving in one country, visiting another country, then returning to the first country may re-enter on the original multiple-entry visa unless they have returned to their home country. Your travel advisor or tour company will work with you on this but it is always best to double-check requirements. As of this writing, prior to visiting Kenya, travelers must fill out an online eVisa application via the eCitizen portal, https://www.ecitizen.go.ke/ Plan to do this in advance based on required time-frames and be prepared to pay at the time of application. Luggage Airlines aside, on safari, not just game drives, each traveler is allowed one soft-sided bag and one day pack for cameras, suntan lotion, etc. The bag should not exceed 30-33 pounds but check with your tour operator for specifics. If you have internal flights from reserve to reserve bag weights are strictly enforced. Travelers arriving in Nairobi or Mombasa can arrange to store extra bags when arriving and departing from the same location. So if a Safari is only part of your vacation, you will have somewhere, at a cost, to store extra luggage. Remember to check with the airline for their policies. Sundries to Bring Bug Spray with Deet. Malaria tablets (if applicable). Antihistamine tablets if you suffer from any allergies. Anti-nausea tablets if you suffer from motion sickness. The vehicle may be a bit bumpy at times. Moisturizing cream for the dry environment Lip balm and suntan lotion – SPF 20 or higher are recommended. Overpacking Don't do it. You will have laundry services at many of the lodges, however, find out if there is a cost and how much, before going. Depending on how you take your safari, you will most likely be limited in the amount and type of luggage you bring. Safety and Security When In Town if you are staying in a town during your trip, you should ask for advice from the local representative or hotel staff concerning safe places to visit. Walking at night is not recommended. The hotel should arrange taxis and a price agreed upon before starting the trip. Do not wear expensive jewelry at any time during your trip. When On Safari During the safari, the driver-guide will be your go-to for safety concerns. It is critical that you follow the instructions given. It will be exciting seeing the animals for the first time and the driver-guide knows what to do and what NOT to do. This is particularly true when advising on when it is safe to leave the vehicle. At the lodges and camps, you will often find that the staff escort guests to and from the rooms. This is to ensure your safety. Remember that wild animals, are just that, wild. - Using Flybus to Get to Reykjavik from the Airport
Location: Reykjavik, Iceland Great for: Singles, Couples, Families, Groups, Destination Weddings, and Honeymoons Flybus Transportation Purchase your tickets online in advance. When you arrive at the airport, go through passport control and get your bags. As you exit the arrival hall you will see the Flybus counter. Bring your voucher to the counter to get a colored ticket for your final stop, then proceed to the bus waiting outside. The counter staff will tell you if it has arrived. The driver will load your suitcases onto the bus and you will be taken to the main bus terminal to change to the final bus. You will have a beautiful view of the landscape on the way so sit back and relax. Upon arrival, you'll see Hallgrimskikja Cathedral from the terminal. There is a cute gift shop, bathrooms (pay for use), food, and some tourist information in the small terminal building to keep you busy. If it is cold outside, wait inside as it is very windy and the hotel bus takes a bit longer unless your timing is just right. The bus will be identified but it is not really obvious so keep an eye out. Someone will collect the tickets and you will board the bus but will have to take your bags onto the bus with you. The driver will ask where you are going to make sure he stops at your hotel. You do not need to tip the driver. This is a good way to get to Reykjavik at a reasonable price but you may wait a bit. As of this writing, they did not have Uber but you can taxi or also choose a private transfer at a much higher cost. If you are interested in traveling to Iceland, we would love to help you get to this awe-inspiring place. - UNICO 20°87° Local Host Program - An Elevated Experience
Location: Riviera Maya, Mexico Great for: Singles, Couples, Groups, Destination Weddings, and Honeymoons UNICO 20°87° has so much to offer to a variety of travelers. Being away from the hustle and bustle of Cancun it offers a serene environment to relax and refresh but also offers a host of activities so you are not too far away from the fun. One of my favorite things about this resort is the local host program. The local host program is something I have been gleaming about since I returned. It is that special touch that says “we want you to have everything you need.” and they are not just for suite guests! They provide a wonderful experience and shout out to Roger, my local host, who was amazing! He answered all of my questions and accommodated my last-minute requests. The local host is there to help with local information and share insider information about spots you would not have thought to visit, answer questions about the classes, the tours, and the experiences, help with dinner reservations, and spa treatments, and even arrange for a bubble bath in your room with aromatherapy salts and oils. Yes, I did, and it was oh-so-wonderful! Here is a rundown of services they can arrange. Insider's guide into the local scene—from hard-to-get reservations to the best-kept secret spots Assistance with check-in and check-out (as you sip on the cocktail or refreshment provided) Late check-out requests Restaurant reservations Tours, golf, and spa reservations* Planning special events or occasions. (This is especially helpful when you travel with a group) Packing and/or unpacking Shoeshine, ironing, and steaming services Laundry service* Cleaning and maintenance requests Spa tub preparation ( Must do!) Bag pick-up at check-out Mixology program Pillow menu request Additional bathroom amenities Aromatherapy *Additional fee When you stay somewhere new, there are always so many questions and you may not be sure if something is included, what is involved to attend, or exactly what type of class you are signing up for. I loved having someone to answer all of those questions while there and the bubble bath was the icing on the cake. So if you like all-inclusive resorts and want a bit of luxury included, take advantage of these services. You won’t be sorry! Watch for more articles on the many things to do at this resort as well as a rundown on the restaurants and my experience eating in almost all of them. - UNICO 20°87° – All-Inclusive, Adults Only, 5-Star Property
Location: Riviera Maya, Mexico Great for: Singles, Couples, Groups, Destination Weddings, and Honeymoons Set on a beautiful white sand beach in Rivera Maya, UNICO 20°87° creates a memorable moment from the time you pass the gate and wind through the long driveway into a luxurious paradise. You’ll see the details as everyone welcomes you in this marvelous and inviting lobby. The grounds are beautiful and placed between what appears to be a tropical forest and a stunning turquoise-blue ocean with beautiful walkways leading from the property to the beach. The beach is on the small side but intimate and long with plenty of room for lounges and walking along the sand without running into people. The sand is fine, white, and wonderful. If you are worried about sargassum, I saw tractors daily cleaning the beach. No promises for your stay but this was an excellent sign! Walking the property you will hear the sounds of birds with beautiful plumage, spot iguanas, and if you are lucky, you might get to see a coati roaming by. Upon arrival, you are greeted with a beverage and a local host to help you check in. Yes, it is luxurious but in a very relaxed and unpretentious way. Inviting, beautiful, full of local art, upscale, and well done. The hotel embraces the local food and customs but expands upon the theme with a variety of enticing restaurants. The spa also uses local herbs and elements in the treatments they offer. Comfort is the name of the game here and with custom bath amenities, a fully-equipped fitness center, 24-hour room service, and a local host to assist with your needs. A variety of included activities from salsa dancing and chocolate classes to beach walks and Shaman rituals are available. They have so many activities that I have a dedicated blog about the experiences you can have here. With all of these activities, don't worry if you are traveling solo, you will have a great time too! The 20 87 pool is lined with Cabanas, chaise lounges, and round bed-type chaises. It hosts a swim-up bar, volleyball area, basketball area, and of course nearby hot tubs. There are several pools including a quiet pool area with its own swim-up bar and food situated behind the 20 87 Restaurant. As far as rooms, 90% have ocean views. Some have a view of the pool and ocean and others have a full view of the ocean. My room was on the 4th floor with a view of the pool, the grounds, and the ocean. Having a cup of coffee from the Nespresso machine provided or room service and looking out over the balcony was such a calming and joyful experience. At night some of the pools are lit in a beautiful blue light and are stunning. In the morning you will watch the sunrise over the water and the colors on the hotel with a gorgeous orange hue. Just lovely. Sunsets are equally incredible. The room is well stocked with everything you need and check out the blog on the rooms at this resort for more detail. Here is a quick rundown of the resort amenities. 5-star adults-only accommodations Local host services In-room minibar stocked according to preference Custom-scented amenities 5 unique restaurants, including Cueva Siete with celebrity chef Lula Martin del Campo Complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi Free calls to the Continental US & Canada 24-hr room service Five bars with a devoted mixology program and a lounge featuring live entertainment Poolside and beachside service including snacks and beverages Land and water sports Fitness Center with a visiting instructor program Daily and nightly events Exclusive Experiences and activities If you have not been to UNICO 20°87°, and are looking for less party, lots of fun, and an elegant escape, this may be the place for you to try next. The price point for this property with the luxury offering is hard to beat. I loved it, will visit again, and would recommend it. Pro tip: They have the most amazing Wedding Arch. As you approach the arch you look through to the beach with turquoise water, white sand, and swaying palm trees. Just breath-taking.
